Norway to show a gay film to asylum seekers

According to a new plan all asylum seekers to Norway must see a film about gay people. The Migration Office has ordered an educational video that will be translated into 13 languages.

The ministry's aim is to reduce possible prejudice towards sexual minorities.

"We want to present homosexuality as normal and accepted. It's something that must be accepted if one wants to live and Norway and become a part of Norwegian society", says the director of the film, Mari Finnestad.

The film features, for example, homosexual immigrant and a lesbian couple with children.

For a moment I thought they were talking about The Brokeback Mountain, commonly known in Finland as "The Gay Film"

In some ways I think its a good idea (removing prejudice) but you can't force people how to think.

I'm all for everyone being tolerant and stuff, but 1: there are ALOT of people who are born here in the west and disagree with homosexuality and are prejudiced and such. 2: What if the immigrants don't agree with homosexuality? You send them back to an unsafe place because they might not agree with something us 'tolerant' people want them to agree with? That doesn't seem very tolerant of us...

Kinda ridiculous. What's next? You can't get into a country if you're an atheist, because you might be intolerant towards religion and religious people!?

Oh well... they only have to watch the movie, right!? There are no demands for them to accept homosexuality or else they won't be allowed in? That's OK I guess. Seems a bit overdone though.

It doesn't sound like it has relevance on grounds for being allowed in. That would be impossible to measure.

I was thinking the same.

I guess if it educates people, it's a good idea but homophobic people are never going to change their opinion based on a video alone. I think basically, it's pointless.

I think the new policy is kinda good, as silly it is. Not that it will change anyone's mind about gay people, but it states the country's official line. You come to Norway, you play by their rules. If you can't do that, then don't come, or at least complain that "I didn't know" and that "in my country we burn the gay niggers..."

Surely there are more subtle ways of explaining the laws of the land?
