Raise The Red Lantern and other Zhang Yimou masterworks

Post by luckystars »

Just watched RTRL for the first time and loved it - a truly exquisite bit of top level filmmaking :)

As I'm only familiar with his later stuff, any hints on what to pick up next? Hopefully with good UK releases (any format) I can pick up easily

There was meant to be a UK release of RTRL but it hasnt surfaced yet. I'd like to see that too.

Ju Dou and Lifetimes are good films, though Red Lantern is the best of the three.

All star the exceptional Gong Li.

Don't know about UK releases though.

Regarding "Raise the Red Lantern", I cannot find anything on a UK release but it looks like the Hong Kong ERA Remastered edition or MGM R1 (make sure it's MGM) DVDs are the way to go. It looks like MGM re-used ERA's master:

"The Road Home" starring Zhang Ziyi is very good. USA, UK, HK are all Columbia Tristar, are basically identical and excellent quality (I own the UK release). Happy Times is supposed to be good too.

I think I did comparisons of RTRL, Happy Times, Riding Alone... and maybe Shanghai Triad or another.

I've liked all his films I've seen except HoFD. Did a rather substantive piece of writing on The Story of Qiu Ju and Chinese dispute settlement recently.
