Akira Kurosawa's brilliantly conceived retelling of Shakespeare's 'King Lear' magically mixes Japanese history, Shakespeare's plot and Kurosawa's own feelings about loyalty in this epic masterpiece.
Set in 16th century Japan, an aging ruler, Lord Hidetora (Tatsuya Nakadai), announces his intention to divide his land equally among his three sons. This decision to step down unleashes a power struggle between the three, when Hidetora falls prey to the false flattery bestowed upon him by the two older sons and banishes the youngest when he speaks the truth. The ruthless betrayal ultimately drives Hidetora insane, destroying his entire family and kingdom. Deep human emotion and outstanding acting combine to create one of the most acclaimed foreign films of all time.

I hope Seven Samurai is released on BD soon, that would need at least 2 BD's though

Re: Ran on Blu-Ray - September
Do you have any clue how many hours of video you can fit on a BD-50 Grim? Seven Samurai would only need one disc as long as it's compressed properly.

I don't really know
What about if it had all the stuff from the most recent Criterion?

Maybe 2 discs tops but 1 disc for the film. Also remember MPEG4 compression is significantly better than MPEG2.

A BD-50 is supposed to be able to handle over 9hrs of HD video or 23hrs of SD video.

Not worth bothering with again in HD for Ran.
If it was Seven Samurai I would be there.
Only god knows how a film over 3 hours will suffer with little problems, look at the Watchmen UK/USA problems and thats only 3 hours long.

They can barley cope with 3 hours on a disc and still make it look perfect, so 9 is never gonna happen.

Thats just what it's "supposed" to do, doesnt mean its the norm. I'd hope with long movies (LOTR, Gone with the Wind, Seven Samurai etc) you wont have to swap the BDs over.

Re: Ran on Blu-Ray - September
Supposed means nothing at all, no way they can ever fit quality video onto a disc running at 9 hours.
I can fit 20+ hours onto a dvd, it looks like shit, but I can do it.
Many companies can barley get most 2 hour films looking perfect, never mind anything more.

I'm sure many will disagree.romerojpg wrote:Not worth bothering with again in HD for Ran.
Of course it does you fool. I can well imagine Shing was talking at lowest quality. Obviously they'd never put 9Hrs on a single BD.romerojpg wrote:Supposed means nothing at all, no way they can ever fit quality video onto a disc running at 9 hours.

I'm sure this news has been posted before, anyhow.

Well it does indeed show you how little you know about Blu Ray.bradavon wrote:Of course it does you fool. I can well imagine Shing was talking at lowest quality. Brad v Romero - round 467
I too very much doubt 9 hours would go on a single BD50. I wasnt aware it had been posted before - sorry.

Re: Ran on Blu-Ray - September
I'm sure it could but the point is 3-4Hrs can easily fit with decent quality. It's often not compression that spoils a transfer but something else.I too very much doubt 9 hours would go on a single BD50.
How so? You always do this, make stupid claims (or just laugh) without backing them up. It's obvious Shing was talking about "lowest quality per. BD" and it's also obvious they'd never actually put that much on a single disc. So where don't I understand?romerojpg wrote:Well it does indeed show you how little you know about Blu Ray.

Re: Ran on Blu-Ray - September
Wrong? nothing exactly what I would call wrong, but when compared to the UK version the image is a little bit lesser quality (just a bit), lower bit rate it seems to be to blame for fitting so much on the american disc, so the UK and USA discs are that tiny bit different to each other.saltysam wrote:What's up with Watchmen? my usa disc played fine throughout with no problems.romerojpg wrote: look at the Watchmen UK/USA problems and thats only 3 hours long.

Re: Ran on Blu-Ray - September
I'm not entirely convinced that the problem is purely with the capacity of the discs, most encoding problems are down to sloppy compression. I've seen low-bitrate transfers that have very little in the way of compression issues and high-bitrate transfers with noise all over the place!romerojpg wrote:They can barley cope with 3 hours on a disc and still make it look perfect, so 9 is never gonna happen.
As a good example I've recently written a review of Optimum's release of Le Grand Bleu, which has just over 5hrs of HD video (and 97mins of SD video) at a video bitrate averaging 16.41Mbps for the longue version and 18.77Mbps for the theatrical, and it looks pretty good. Obviously there are compression issues here and there, but it's all rather minimal.

Re: Ran on Blu-Ray - September
Yup I agree with that, some 90 minute films look a shambles and some look perfect. So yup they need to learn how to make perfect discs and encode consistently well
then they would please us all.
It is a shame no one company (except maybe Pixar) gets it pretty much nearly right all the time.

There's also the trouble that some people are insanely fussy and frankly are looking for faults. That and film stock (I think the right word) differs wildly, so they can only work with what they're given.

I guess with a statement like that you have the UK disc as well then?gasteropod wrote:The US BD of Watchmen looks great, shut up Romero lol
Where did I say it was not looking great? it looks cracking,
but it could look better when compared to the UK disc for one reason, space and compression and lower bit rates etc...
