Charity shops in town centres...

Just been down to the local shops, an area that has gone right down the nick in recent years.walking along it struck me the amount of charity shops now there...in a stretch of about half a mile there are 4 of them! don't get me wrong,i'm all for charity,i give a tenner a month out of my bank to Cancer Research & Unicef but i can't help thinking shopping malls are being over run.

i understand the argument that these shops would otherwise be vacant and fall into disrepair but surely having so many in close proximity to each other is bad for each other's business? i suppose it's a sign of the decline in local shopping centres...

There's about 8 hair dresses in a town near me, way more than can really stay in business, they must scrape by.

There are also about 6 Thai restaurants. Madness!

When I'm in Hong Kong in Tai Po, you have LOTS of business competing with eachother. It's perfect, and they do seem to stay in business, also because they all have to keep their prices low to keep customers coming in.
I can get a haircut for a few euro, or go to an 'expensive' barber and get it done for 80 HK dollar orso (which is about 8 euro. It's perfect!

I live near a single street that has about six hairdressers/barbers on it.

Also you get a lot of sports shops (so gadgies can buy football tops and trackie bottoms).

the charity shop count in the stretch of shops has gone from 4 to 6...do they get subsidised rent?

I understad they get lower business rates. I'm always in the Charity Shops rounds our way, I buy literally tonnes of VHS and lot of CD's & DVD's for pennies

There's now about 7 charity shops in my local centre,about 4 sunbed places and 5-6 hairdressers. There's one Iceland and one butcher's left amongst the dross.i can remember what a vibrant shopping area it was in the 70's/80's....a real shame

My local is made up of banks, charity shops and opticians. I've never understood how a small high street of a small town can keep over 5 bleedin' opticians in business!
