The Arrival: Original 1997 DVD vs. 2009 Blu-ray *LARGE PIX*

Post by captainjoe »

Top: 1997 DVD (non-anamorphic laserdisc master)
Bottom: 2009 Blu-ray

There's no competition here. A non-anamorphic DVD made before the millennium stands no contest in beating out a new high definition transfer. However that doesn't mean the
blu-ray is great. The detail levels seem about right, no problems there but this is just another example of DNR. It's not too bad though, no waxy textures it just seems flatter than
it should. My major issue with the transfer though is the black levels. It seems to have been cranked up resulting in a drab appearance. Had the levels not been tweaked to this
degree and the DNR/EE turned down a bit this would be an A transfer.
As it stands I can recommend this upgrade because the DVD was just terrible (look at that last pic!) and nearly unwatchable, it's just a shame more effort wasn't put in on the new HD transfer.

The blu-ray is clearly the better of the two but it looks like neutralised the colours.

Yup it reminds me of a washed out transfer like the new T2 Skynet transfer, still I guess in theory you can always pump up the colour on your screen way above normal :D and the contrast a bit, that would bulk it up a bit.
