This is a topic I wanted to start partly because the film is great, and partly to support Synapse who release globally best editions of many great films, as well as terrific editions of films never before released on dvd. Yet, like many small companies, they could go out of business any time if their sales don't meet the expectations.

Karaoke Terror has been released elsewhere before, but this is a solid dvd that deserves to be bought. If it interests you already, then skip this topic as the film works best if you don't know anything about it.

Karaoke Terror (Shôwa kayô daizenshû) (2003)

Original, weird, and just a little bit ingenious. A slacker youth kills a middle aged woman after being rejected while trying to pick her up. The woman’s friends – all middle aged, all divorced, and all named Midori – decide to get revenge. But the man’s friends could not tolerate being humiliated by egocentric women in their 30s. This launches a war between sexes and generations – all set to showa era (1926–1989) hit songs. Decidedly slow paced but ultimately very funny movie about gender roles, completed with violence and karaoke. Based on a novel by Ryu Murakami, who has dealt with similar themes in his earlier works too (Audition, Love & Pop).

Please do not watch any trailers or teasers for this film because all of them them spoil way too much. If you want some preview then look at the screencaptures below while listening to Ozaki Kiyohiko's song mata au hi made that appears on the film's soundtrack.

This was on German television a couple of months back (Original audio with subs), but I missed it. So thanks for the reminder. I'll probably buy the Synapse-Release, then, together with those GINZA BUTTERFLY movies.
