First VHS: Some episodes of the Transformers TV series and Transformers: The Movie. My family rented those and dubbed them onto blank cassettes.

Premium VHSes? 6 or 7 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tapes.

First DVDs: My brother bought Scream and Starship Troopers in 1997.
(The first DVD that I actually owned was Pokemon: The First Movie.)

First CD: Elton John - a greatest hits compilation. I was big into Lion King at the time (ages 7/8).

First BD: Kung Fu Hustle

Those old big box Warner cases make me nostalgic for a childhood misspent in video stores. :D

Yeah me too, I miss those dusty old video stores you'd find tucked away somewhere in town, I remember one by me was built on top of a petrol station and it had a boatload of 70s and early 80s DTV horror films! :D

It's a great movie, just not the sort of thing I'd expect Criterion to put out ;)

I'm surprised your very first video was a martial arts movie Salty. I'd have thought it would be something Hollywood.

I've no idea what my first video was. I'd have been a kid but my first DVD was probably Tomorrow Never Dies too, £18.99 from Play.com. I bought Crouching Tiger (for £28 from London, China town) and The Matrix shortly after.

Well back in 1979-1980 when VHS came out they released about 7-8 titles at £39.99 each, they were about the only titles available to buy. i'd already seen ETD twice at the cinema and loved it so it was an easy choice for me.

Did you have to send away for it in the post? It doesn't look like a UK Video, uncut too.

That's how UK videos used to look.

Obviously the uncut pre-cert released circa 1981.

Videos didn't require BBFC certificates until the VRA in 1984 so you could buy anything you liked upto that point as long as some distributor was willing to put it out.

I really miss those old dusty moth-eaten rental stores.

ETD pre-cert lists an incorrect running time of 86 minutes on the back.mine was brand new complete with inlay card.

- My first music-casette was Wham The Final or something. Their last album. Great album as well. I got it from my dad and my stepmom with my new radio when I was 8-9 or whatever. I remember liking the music, but I complained that I rather would have wanted M.A.S.K. toys, as that's what I had asked for. I never even was interested in a radio to begin with. I also got a great sweet stuffed dog btw(not a real one, Grim. Hold your tears).

- My first VHS: I have absolutely no clue. I'm GUESSING it must have been either Akira, A Better Tomorrow, or Hard-Boiled or something. It also could have been some dutch Bruce Lee tapes or Jackie Chan ones. I don't remember. I just know that suddenly I became very interested in movies, especially asian cinema, and bought some nice ones in Amsterdam.

- My first DVD: In the Mood for Love. My girlfriend bought this DVD for me. The movie has a special meaning for me, because of a girl with pretty bad timing.
My girlfriend paid about 100 guilders for it, which is about 45 euros. Way too much obviously for a DVD, but at that time DVD's were still relatively new and thus expensive here in Holland, and I guess I hadn't discovered Inet shopping yet (got a credit card pretty soon after though).

Would that be a port of the French SE of ITMFL Yi-Long? I paid over the odds for the French SE (in it's limited digi-pack) and still have it. The Criterion is possibly better but there's nowt wrong with the French SE either.

It was a complete blind buy. I'd never seen a WKW film before.

The latter is was I really meant about it not looking like a UK video. I didn't know it was ever uncut here (up until recently again of course).

From 1981-1984 you could legally buy or rent ENTER uncut.

Once the VRA came into effect retailers were given a two year state of grace to remove all uncertified titles from their shelves.
