Jackie Chan could star in the remake of the 1984 movie The Karate Kid.

From BBC.co.uk (Entertainment):
Jackie Chan is in negotiations to star in the remake of 1984 hit movie The Karate Kid, according to reports.

The martial arts star would take on the role of mentor Mr Miyagi, industry newspaper Hollywood Reporter says.

The character was made famous by Pat Morita in the original film franchise and earned him an Oscar nomination.

Jaden Smith, the son of Hollywood actor Will Smith, has already been cast as the boy to be mentored by the martial arts expert.

Like the original film, the movie will tell the story of a boy who is picked on by bullies who learns to stand up for himself with the help of Mr Miyagi.

Ralph Macchio starred in three Karate Kid films, while Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank took over the main role in The Next Karate Kid in 1994.

Filming for the new movie will begin next year in Beijing.
I remember the 1st film, and The Next Karate Kid (saw it on a plane).

I've never seen Jaden Smith act though.

How old was he in the original? I thought he was at least a teenager.

Macchio was 23 playing a 16-17yr old (well, no younger than 16).

I'm with Mark. They should leave 80s classics alone. Sure this was no Terminator but like Crocodile Dundee it was an 80s movie and should stay there.

Mark,
I mentioned Rambo because Brad said "The 80's classics should be left alone" but Rambo IV was an example of a belated sequel to an 80's classic he liked, I think.
I havent gone senile yet but I'll admit I should have introduced my post more clearly :D
My "Eh?" was in response to your "Wax on?" comment, what does that mean?

Oh come on, everyone knows the 'wax on, wax off' quote from Karate Kid, I haven't even seen the film lol.

Right, er, that wasn't exactly clear. :D

I should have been clearer, oops :D Its funny, when I post online I dont feel most of the time like I have an online "persona", I make the same silly mistakes here too ;) :)
I know "wax on..." now but what does it have to do with Brad's earlier post?

I was referring to remakes.

Am I mental??? Grim, you're making me doubt my sanity here. Isn't this a thread about THE KARATE KID remake??

Yes.
Anyway, I think the Jackie character will be made "funny", or perhaps a Drunken Master type person (would be a neat reference).

There have only been Terminator sequels to date, ditto for Crocodile Dundee.

I've stopped caring about remakes, their existence have no real effect on the original film, aside from better home video format releases like remasters and Special Editions.

If you let them tarnish the original for you then you're an idiot.

True, it does annoy me when the remake is discussed way more than the original.

Take The Departed for example, the amount of praise that got. Sure it's good but it's not as good as the original.

The Departed only won Scorcese an Oscar because they figured he might die before they had another chance.
