Taken: Extended Harder Cut

Play.com seem to suggest this is an 18! Not many action movies are 18 rated these days, you can get away with a lot at 15.
Many on Imports Forum seemed to enjoy the movie :D On paper it sounds a bit like "Commando".

Is this really extended, or just the original version? I thought the US and UK theatrical versions were cut.

The BBFC said "no cuts" were made, but I read the Extended Classification info and it sounds like edits were made by the company to get a 15 (or something like that) so you could be right, perhaps its just the original version.

In the extended info it says the film was passed "18" :?

I'm not sure what we're supposed to be looking at there, but IMDB says:

# The UK cinema version has an alternate electrocution torture sequence. In the original version, Neeson stabs two metal spikes into the legs of his hostage and connects the jump leads to them. In the UK version, he simply attaches the leads to the metal chair. This is completely different footage redone to secure a lower rating.

# Some of the shoot outs, the torture scene and some fisticuffs have been shortened in length for the film's US release to secure a PG-13 rating.

I wasn't so sure about this because the same director made Banlieue 13 which is total garbage. But I've been hearing so much good about Taken that I may check it afterall. I belive we have the uncut version playing in theaters around here.

The IMDB rating is 7.9 with 25 000 votes so I guess people are liking it. But that doesn't mean it's good, of course.

Taken was loads of fun. I saw a download of the unrated cut.

It's cheese + brutal action. Great to watch with a few mates as I did :)

it's a 3.5/5 movie akin to something like The One (meaning if you enjoyed it, despite being cheese-tastic). Good B-movie stuff. :D

Taken is superb, only a twat would not like Taken.

Everyone I know loved it (some people I know thought it the film of the year), and pretty much everyone on forums love it, its exactly what you want, hard and nasty Neeson kicking the shit out of people. No bullshit.
The new cut is a bit harder, more bone snapping and knife stabbing and torture etc... he basically kills people even more brutally.

Its nothing at all like The One :D in any way, and Banlieue 13 is fucking superb as well. Bring on part 2 in a month!

B13 is a cool action film.

Appears there are currently three versions of TAKEN

PG-13
'15' (UK cinema verison)
'18' (UK video version)

I imagine that the Unrated version Luckystars speaks of would be the same as our '18' version.

I like revenge thrillers so will probably give this a go sometime.

I enjoyed District 13, it was good fun, a cool actioner. Loved the parkour stunts.

So it was cut further in USA cinemas? That's unusual. I wonder why we didn't get the PG-13 cut (probably as 12A).

The PG-13 cut could have been our 15 though (but unlikely).

Pass, I saw a few episodes of this mini-series a few years and it was nothing special. Plus I can't stand Dakota Fanning after fucking War of the Worlds.

Eh? It's a different movie called Taken, its nowt to do with the Spielnerg mini-series. :)

I never said it was similar to The One, other than it being cheesey fun. There's no parallel dimensions in it either...

:D

Ahh yes in that respect it is like The One :D I like The One, for what it was, it had a few really nice bits, but plenty of bits I hated as well, so it merges together.

Taken is not out in America yet by the way, in cinemas this week I think (or next) :) from what I read all versions are cut worldwide, apart from on dvd and Blu Ray, even France had the cut version in cinemas and they pretty much made it. Well from what I read anyway as all dvds so far are pimpin the Uncut,Extended, Unrated status of the discs when they do come out.

I saw this in the cinema yesterday. The UK and US theatrical versions are indeed cut, as our cinema print features the original torture scene that according to IMDB is missing from the UK version.

And as for pg-13, that's a bloody joke. You can cut 30 minutes from this film and it should still be R. It seems that MPAA only cares about what you see in the image. But while Taken is somewhat graphic, it's actually far more brutal in psychological sense.

In the BBFC links Brad has provided, the 18 version is shorter than the 15 version. WTF?

15 version (93m 34s):

18 version (89m 32s):

PAL issue?

Posted: 15 Mar 2009, 13:32
by bradavon
Correct. The 15 version is for the cinema release and 18 for the only DVD release. I believe they word it like this:

Feature Film - Cinema
Video Feature - DVD (maybe Blu-ray too)

I cannot find a "Video Feature" rated 15.
