Hey Bruce. Long time no visit. What have you been up to? How is married life?

Things are fine here, Bullets was down for 2 weeks recently but is now back up again.

Bruce got married? That explains why he's not been allowed to post here. What's your husband's name? And have you adopted any African orphans yet?

Yep still here. :D

I don't think I actually posted on the forums about being married, but yes, I got married 3 years ago (to a girl ;) ), will be four years in March. :o Also, I now have an almost 3 month old baby boy, so needless to say, I struggle to cram in time to watch dvds these days between changing nappies. :D

His name is Ethan. :)

It's good to see that this forum is still going strong. What have you guys been up to? I haven't upgraded to blu ray yet. I may do soon with the players getting cheaper and cheaper. Although I don't know how you would go about updating firmware (I believe it has to be done regularly, I haven't really had time to read up on it to be honest).

Just buy a PS3 as your BR player. It's still pretty mcuh one of the ebst BR players available, supposedly has very good upscaling capabilities, you can also use it as a very functional mediacenter, updating the firmware is easy, and you can enjoy games on it.

Ethan!? Did you name it after a specific person, or did you just like the name? It's a cool name, but it just reminds me of Ethan Hawk :P

Firmware upgrades can be done over the air if you've got it plugged into a Broadband router. If not you just plonk them on a USB Stick/CD/DVD. It's dead simple and only needs to be done from time to time, if at all (it depends on the model and how major the upgrade is).

I've upgraded mine a few times but that's just me. Only one upgrade was major enough to make it recommended for everyone.

The PS3 is a very good BD Player, as are ones from Panasonic or Sony. The PS3 is no longer the only worthwhile BD Player but yes it is still one of the top ones. Personally I'd get a Player from Sony or Panasonic but then I don't play Games, so the PS3 is pointless for me.
supposedly has very good upscaling capabilities
That's so subjective I never believe a word of it. I've equally read it's tosh. Frankly while upscaling adds a level of detail it's also overrated and people often claiming their player upscales well are actually saying it has superior decoding chips in it.

Progressive Scan for instance is more important than Upscaling. If you have a decent TV it wil upscale anyway, although it may not upscale as well as the Player. You need to test both.

I don't see how progressive scan is comparable to upscaling, as the former is about motion, and the latter is about resolution...

My PS3 upscales significantly better than my Toshiba 47Z3030 LCD by the way, and I think that's the norm (players upscaling better than TVs).

Comparable in what does a better job of improving the picture, not comparable in what they do.

My (now sold) Pioneer DV-868AVi did a much better job of upscaling too, not surprising given that was the top of Pioneer's range in 2005/2006. It upscaled better than my LG BH200 BD Combo Player.

Upscaling is still overrated though.

I'm going to keep an eye on any deals before and after christmas. :)

We named him after Tom Cruise's character in Mission Impossible. ;) :D Nah, we just liked the name. I was originally going to call him Dennis (after me).

When you have a large quality screen come back and say that. Larger you get, the more it is noticable.

Agreed. Anyone who calls their kid Wahlberg needs to be shot in the face.
