Sonatine - R1 vs. R3K vs. R4

Post by Lourdes »

All discs are progressive
R3K is a probable R2J port

R1 Top, R3K Middle, R4 Bottom

I think Miramax got it right here, the colours are a little bit beyond normal but it's not too bad, whereas the R4 looks like it came from a very clean but faded theatre print. It shouldn't look that old or that overblown.

As I recall the R1 subs have bad timing?

Agreed the R1 looks the best but annoyingly to get it you have to also buy Zatoichi.

Yeah, they lag a little bit. I can't remember exactly how much, but maybe 0,5 seconds or more. Making it even more annoying, the other subtitle track on the disc (spanish maybe?) is correctly timed.

I fixed the timings myself (possibly used a different translation, too, but I didn't compare the quality)

Yeah, it sucks. I sold Zatoichi in the orig package so now I have no cover art for Sonatine. Maybe some kind artist could make me a custom R1 cover :)

Added the R3K (R2J port methinks), now this is the one to have if you don't want to have to adjust your colour and contrast settings or put up with poorly timed subs. Looks just as it should be.

Personally I'd have kept Zatoichi to keep it complete. I have Goodfellas twice, once on BD and once on DVD. The latter is part of a box set and it would drop the value of the box set by getting rid of it.

It's no big deal, there are 3 other films in the box set I do want to keep so it's okay.
