R2UK has more detail and doesn't have the out of control whites. It has more picture overall but still loses a little vertically. It does look too dark but what wouldn't when placed next to those R2J caps? You can always increase brightness but the R2J can't be saved.

A good transfer with boosted contrast (and gamma levels, possibly), or a steaming pile of grey edge-enhanced shit?

The R2J isn't a good transfer, what little grain and detail there is is destroyed by the horrific levels (look at the writing and notepad in cap 4). There's not a great deal of EE on the R2UK, this is the worst example:

The R2J would have EE were there any edges in it.

I agree with Lourdes, same reasons. I didn't even spot the EE (on the UK DVD) until it was pointed out.
The R2J is way too bright and lacks detail.
