OldBoy: Tartan US Blu-Ray vs Wild Side R2FR DVD

Post by tom2681 »

Note: although the french transfer is a NTSC > PAL conversion, it looks very similar to the Tartan DVD.
As I understand it, the Tartan Blu-Ray uses an original director-approved print.

Blu-Ray on top.
DVD at bottom.

The BD might be too bright and the blacks might be a bit red, but at least it's uber-sharp and nicely saturated.

Bye-bye edge enhancement and contrast boosting from Hell.
The BD looks great here.

Sorry, not a perfect frame match.
But the difference is still obvious.

Just like I remembered it from the theater.
This scene was always meant to be out of focus with a slight orange tint, not blurry and piss yellow.

Thanks Tom but why didn't you capture against Lourdes's captures? -

That would've been better. A comparison between the BD and HD-DVD would've been nice to see. Thanks though.

A French NTSC to PAL transfers, that's shocking, considering how much French DVDs costs. Is the French DVD Interlaced too? It seems that way from the first set of captures.

An NTSC-PAL transfer is inevitably interlaced. You can't even correct them the way you would correct a typical interlaced transfer

@Brad:
Seeking is too hard, so I can't really match Lourdes' caps.
If I could, I would.

All I can say is that the Blu-Ray transfer is very similar to Lourdes' HD-DVD caps.

EDIT:
OK, I'll see if I can match some of his caps.
No guarantees, though.

Fair enough. I thought that was why but don't you have to match the DVD with BD anyway?

Anyway. I get a good enough idea and the HD-DVD doesn't have English subs. It's cool, thanks. The USA BD SE is one I'll be picking up definitely at some point.

What's the news on the US Vengeance trilogy box set. The first pressing didn't have loseless audio for Oldboy (even though it was on the old BD). Someone at amazon mentioned Tartan would fix it... did they?

Tartan is still in business? Or was it the USA division that closed down?

The whole company went under. They've been bought out and are back in business.

Wasn't the lossless audio dropped because they filled the disc with extras or something like that?
