I'm not a fan, but she's pretty decent for a pop singer. At parties when "White Flag" is played, I wipe the floor with my opponents in Singstar deathmatches. I kinda like "Here With Me" because it was theme song of "Roswell", one of my regular shows that I watched during my early-teens.
Her best single is "Stan" by Eminem. (Incidently that's one of Eminem's few genuinely good works.)
TBH I'd like to wave my White Flag all over her face.
I cannot wait for a new album myself after loving all her songs so far, but most people say they hate her, yet still buy the album and make them the biggest selling albums of the year by a mile. Idiots they are then.
Ahh Roswell, have all 3 seasons to watch on vdd that was the first time anyone heard her songs, still classy today if you aske me.
I thought you didnt know the name of the song (sounded odd when you said 'her best song is 'Stan'.)
Agreed Stan is very good though, it makes a point and has a story to tell, and I don't even like Eminem much but can appreciate he is skillful here.
Eminem is dire, pumping out the exact same crap over and over, its just sad. Still once in a while one of his songs is ok, but he is such an awful person, I try not to care.
I'm generally not a fan but I have his Greatest Hits (surprisingly good) and every song is very different from the last, sure it has a similar sound but unlike many artists he certainly does try to make each song sound different.
Yup thats the problem most his singles sound identical to many, he needs to release a more varied set of songs in the charts (but then like he cares, he makes millions)
As far as I'm concerned he has. Most artists have a very similar sound, it's there sound and they stick to it. Often when they try different things it doesn't work.
I hate rap, but Eminem has done a couple of OK tracks. That's as much praise as you'll get from me. In real life I expect he's a cunt, but then so are a lot of celebrities.
The Slim Shady LP is great, not that I listen to it nowadays though. The Marshall Mathers LP is all right, but then after that he turned shit. He did good in 8 Mile.
Yeah, I've never understood the difference between rap and hip-hop either, Eminem raps, does he not?
Rappers rhyme. Hip hop artists don't necessarily rhyme.
For instance some Justin Timberlake songs are hip hop, but he sure never raps. Rap music from the 80s for sounds quite different from Hip Hop music made today. Whereas Plastic Pop music sounds just like it did in the 80s, except for the 80s synthesiser no longer being used.
I'm no more of an expert than others. I just hear a difference in the music and am willing to bow to those with more knowledge of it than me, instead of just saying "they're the same".
I've not managed to find a predefined example of how they differ but there is this:
Hip-hop n., an American cultural movement composed of four main parts: break dancing and graffiti art along with two more well-known aspects known as hip-hop music; they are mceeing and DJ-ing.
Rap v., the act of saying rhymes to the actual beat of the music.
Well R&B originally meant Rhythm and Blues, I can't see/hear any blues in most watered down US soul/R&B these days. R&B was a term coined by music journo Jerry Wexler as a more acceptable term for "race music" (ie playing black artists on white radio).
R&B has changed in style from what it once was.
Since Brad will probably inevitably bring them up:-
The Black Eyed Peas are utterly dreadful, save for some pre-Fergie stuff and their collaboration with Justin Timberlake. Even then their near-decent material I'd only admire from afar.
They don't sing RnB, possibly a little hip hop (I'm not sure) but otherwise they're not connected. Besides they've not done anything for ages now. I think their Fergie stuff is great but Fergie's solo work has been awful. Much like Gwen Stefani.
@ Grim: Exactly. You've put it better than I could have though.
Alicia Keys beleves that the US Government created BLACK music, rap, violent lyrics etc.. and put out hits and killed many of the creators and singers (2pac, bigie etc..), to put the black man down and make the ghetoes even nastier and kill off the poor black people.
That is crazy, if it's true and she wasn't misquoted.
Alicia Keys has always come across to me to be an intelligent person. What's your source? Was it taken from a longer article?
To answer your question I wasn't talking about black music, no. Music is music and it maybe sung more by a particular colour but it belongs to know one. Many white artists for instance now sing hip hop. Calling it "black music" just fuels the segregation".

I read a corking thing today!
