Hopefully it will mean a decent R1 gets released of the original, it's currently 4:3 and the Tartan UK R2 is 1.85:1 Non-Anamorphic/DD2.0. The Madman R4 is decent though: 1.85:1 Anamorphic and DTS.

From what I know of the original it's not going to be a direct remake, Cage won't be Mute for one, which seems to me takes the whole point away. I just watched the trailer, it doesn't exactly make me jump for joy. It looks like your average action flick.
