The Bible: Fact or Fiction?
Was having a discussion with a friend who in all seriousness claimed they still believed The Bible is factual. I challenged this, naturally, but they refused to budge. I even cited the ridiculous Adam & Eve fairytale, but my friend remained adamant that it's all true. I have no problem with anyone following the ten commandements (sensible enough, if generalised, guidelines) but does anyone here genuinely believe The Bible contains undisputed fact? Or if you're not Christian, the equivilent book for your religion? Have you never questioned it and thought "hang on a minute"? Darwin's theory of evolution is widely accepted as science fact these days, but would you dispute it? Still believe the world is flat?

Well the Bible when it was originally written may have been factual in some way or another, but isn't it widely known (and often disregarded) that it was basically editted and re-written in the middle ages when the church was the all powerfull ruler of everything? Anything in it that didn't serve the Church at that time's interests was probably removed or changed to suit themselves.
I don't believe in God, but I think that nowadawys the Bible is nothing more than a fictitious book that has some good moral and lessons in it.
Cause I don't believe in God I don't believe the original versions of hte Bible were really about a God, but I do think the book was based on real people. Over time, like in Chinese Whispers, the stories changed and this thing about a God started to come about, when way way way back it was probably just a story about someone who was highly idolised.

I've read the Bible once (out of curiosity because I'm an atheist).
There are more plot holes in that book than in the Matrix Trilogy.
It's all fairy tales.
I don't think there is a god. Period.
Long ago, we believed he was a bearded guy who lived in the sky.
Then we went to the sky and didn't find anything. So where is he ?
However I do believe that long ago there lived a lucky guy called Jesus.
He must have been some kind of conjurer who impressed lots of weak-minded people with his tricks.
I find it so obvious now when I read the Gospel.
What amazes me is that some people still believe in all that Bible-God-Gospel-Jesus Christ-Messiah stuff 2 000 years later.
P.S.
God, if you're real, show me a sign.
Vaporize me now !

David Icke, you say ?
I already have:
- Children of the Matrix.
- And the truth shall set you free.
- Truth vibrations.
- Heal the world.
- Lifting the veil.
I just LOVE his work !

If people want to take the Bible seriously as a true account, then hey, let them. I don't have the time or interest to try and convince obviously stupid people who are too lazy too think for themselfs or just find it easier to blindly follow a 2000+ year old book of BS fairytales, about how wrong they are...
Plus if you're already so stupid as to actually think it's all real, then I doubt there's much hope that there are any working braincells left in their thick skull to have an open mind to logic...
I do believe there is a Jezus though. Plus a big slut called Maria who cheated on that poor Josef guy...
I just doubt they were on mission from God or whatever (unlike Jake and Elwood)
Jezus was just a messed up dude, because of his whoring/lying mom and his depressed stupid dad...
This messed up guy just happened to have a smooth talk about being the son of GOD etc... plus he died a marter's death, which always does well with the fanbase, so now we all know him as Jezus; son of God!, instead of 'Jezus, son of 'easy sleezy'.
Anyway, don't really care if people believe that shit or not. I do care when people use stuff that's supposedly in there, to justify discriminating certain people (gays) or to limit people in their personal freedoms etc.
I hope the pope croaks, btw
The guy could have and should have spoken out about condoms and safe sex a long long time ago...
The guy has blood on his hands. Tainted, dirty, sick blood. I hope he'll go to hell and has to look into the eyes of every HIV-died baby that was born doomed cause their parents didnt believe in safe-sex because of GOD.
Speaking of Hell... while I certainly dont believe in a God, the existence of Satan has undeniable been proven: Ben Stiller.

I'm an atheist but I believe a lot of the aspects of the Old Testament are based on historical events but locations and people involved can often be incorrect. The whole "creationism" thing, however, completely falls over under any sort of rationale though they still try to teach it as fact in some US colleges.Markgway wrote:Was having a discussion with a friend who in all seriousness claimed they still believed The Bible is factual. But it's interesting to consider what we accept as fact or fiction. Do we accept what we read or hear as 100% fact or only what we experience ourselves as it's the only true source? Anything we read is subject to distortion due to the fact that it's second-hand info and the writer probably has some sort of bias involved. Simply a much smaller variety of the distortion that occurred in the bible.
I mention this since you've actually stated a "fact" in your post about the world being flat that is commonly believed to be true but is in fact a misconception through the same kind of factual distortion that occurs over time as with the bible. It is a widely-held belief that people in the mediaeval ages thought the world was flat, stemming from the tale of Christopher Columbus heading out to prove them all wrong. In fact, this is completely wrong... no-one has been historically noted as thinking the world was flat, it has always thought to be round. Thanks to early astronomers, the concept of the world and the heavens has always involved spheres.
The bible isn't factual, but then not much is ever 100% factual either.

Very interesting, intelligent post Memetic.

Thanks for the insight. No prob
This article explains it pretty well.

I saw a documentary recently that analysed biblical accuracy in relation to the "Walls of Jericho" story. It's believed that the location and time are incorrect and that construction techniques of that time couldn't have been crumbled by sound... probably just fanciful storytelling or shoddy workmanship

I thought many people DID believe the world was flat, as it shows in the arts from that time-period with ships falling of into a sea of flames!?
Personally though, I cant believe people would have been capable of being so stupid as to actually believe that crap, but hey, in 1000 years time, that's probably what people will think of us and our ideas and science and politics etc...
The eart isn't FLAT! It's ROUND.... as round as a pancake...

Would you be able to tell the world was round from your everyday life? We only know what we know because scientists have enlightened us. If you lived in the Middle Ages you would probably assume the Earth was flat as much as any ordinary ignorant person. That's why we need scholars to tell us the truth. Now we have Satellites and Spaceships to reply upon.Personally though, I cant believe people would have been capable of being so stupid as to actually believe that crap, but hey, in 1000 years time, that's probably what people will think of us and our ideas and science and politics etc...

Bible total and utter bollcks!
but a few things are probibly based on things that did happen, but really anyone who takes this stuff seriously is totally brainwashed!
Religion is totally evil to me, more people have died and are dying now because of some ridiculously ignorant religion!
I just find it sad people devote there lives to religion and break all the rules and still expect to go to the nice afterlife! they think breaking small rules is ok, or even massive big rules are ok, as long as they think they aredoing ok.
Take evil fucking scum across the world right now killing in Iraq and other places in that area, killing for a religion and for idiotic reasons and they expect to go to the nice afterlife hahahahahahahaha burn in hell your murdering scum!

Yup, that's why I said maybe, maybe notMarkgway wrote:Just because the Moon is round doesn't mean Earth HAS to be. If all you saw was flat you would assume the Earth was flat. It's only because we know it isn't it isn't.
Surely someone must have seen the Moon and philosophised that they too were living on a spherical object, but obviously not everyone is that thoughtful 8)

I found this article very interesting in showing how the Bible said about the Reptilians that David Icke wrote about. http://www.ryanmcginty.com/fallen.html
