Some horrendous banding and aliasing in places but the HD-DVD is clearly much better.

The guy who came up with the idea of releasing these as a first release on a competing format must have been fired.

Why, because it clear that Japan belonged to Blu-ray from day one?

I think it was the already implemented interactive content features that HD-DVD supported at time that attracted Bandai to experiment with the format. Showing off Patlabor 1 & 2/Honneamise at some trade show obviously trapped them.

I took caps of the R2J's only to find out that they're identical to the R1's. Not really a surprise.
