The DVD is very old, released in 1998. The results speak for themselves really. Studio Canal's master likely isn't all that recent either. Overall this film probably could do with a remaster, as long as it retains the intentional grainy cinematography.

It's worth noting that the MGM transfer is matted for 1.78:1, whilst the Studio Canal transfer is at 1.66:1. Which is the OAR? Who knows. Also the R1 has a DD5.1 track, whilst the HD-DVD is 4.0 discrete (DTS-HD Master 4.0). Again we have no idea which is the true sound mix.

The R1 is progressive for the most part, although I did find some interlacing. The HD-DVD is encoded with VC-1.

The DVD looks like a poor VCD and the HD-DVD looks like an old VHS.

Studiocanal are mocking people with that release. Someone should notify the consumers defence association in France. It's like pissing on people who forked out 25 € for that shit.

The caps (both DVD and HD) look poor IMO, neither look very sharp or detailed.

An HD-DVD much worse than a DVD, wow.

I compared my R1 with Aussie HD-DVD earlier tonight and the HD-DVD is clearly better, the encoding on the R1 is a disaster, with fleck marks and other nasties all over the place.

The HD-DVD is far from a super looking HD-DVD though, it's too soft and looks more like a Semi-Remastered DVD. The audio is only DTS-HD 2.0 compared with the livelier DD5.1 on the R1. I've no idea which is original but the R1's 5.1 doesn't sound fake.

The DTS-HD 2.0 Stereo copes well though.

Agreed, it looks that way on the captures but in reality it's better. You cannot really see the encoding problems on these static images.
