HD disc screen captures - how to?

Post by EvaUnit02 »

I would like to take manipulation free screen captures from HD discs via my ROM drive. How do I accomplish this without ripping a film to my HDD?

I'm running:-
PowerDVD v7.3
Nvidia 8800GT (fully HDCP compliant)
Samsung 226BW (fully HDCP compliant)

Thanks in advance.

I recommend demuxing then opening MPEG2 in VDubMod (or can it open m2ts directly, don't recall) and anything else in MPC+Haali using ffdshow with deblocking disabled (H.264), VC-1 should be using the codec you get with WMP11. You should have AnyDVD HD on the go of course (they've now bested the current iteration of BD+).
I'll try to come up with a neat and compact method sometime that gives frame-by-frame movement back and forth.

Kind of difficult to do without a UDF2.5 filesystem driver for XP x64.

EDIT: AnyDVD Ripper seems to do the job. But I'd have to rip the entire 15-50GB disc every time I wanted to take some captures? UGH.

Ah... is that why I can't see the contents of my blu-ray discs?
Good to know.

Will give AnyDVD Ripper a go.

I've some ideas already for a self=contaiend method, just need to do some testing. Eva, I think you'll be right out of luck - if you can't read the filesystem you're stuck with proper players.

There are definitely UDF2.5 readers for XP 64 though, have a Google and see what you can come up with.

I've ripped the HD-DVD, how in god's name do I take caps now? When I try to play the EVO files in WMP11 or MPC I only get sound, no picture. PowerDVD seems to be the only thing I have that displays the video.

Thanks in advance.

You need to demux it first (separate the audio from the video).

If the codec is AVC, you can play it through MPC using CoreAVC (or FFDShow).
If the codec is Mpeg-2, use VirtualDubMod.
If the codec is VC1... I don't know (I'm searching).

You shouldn't need to demux the video, just make sure you have the latest verion of Haali installed and ffdshow set to decode H.264 (for some reason CoreAVC doesn't always work).

Got the latest ffdshow SSE w/ deblocking disabled tweak + Haali. I still only get audio, but no video.
