Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: R1Superbit vs Regular R2UK

Post by tom2681 »

R1SB Top.
R2UK Bottom.

If you look closely (very very very closely), you'll notice that there's a little bit more grain on the wall on the Superbit. The low bitrate on the R2UK hides it.
The windows are a bit more detailed too.

Once again, the Superbit has more grain (look at the blue bits). Zero additional detail, though.

Michelle's lips are more visible on the Superbit.
Thanks to the higher bitrate, the sky has less macroblocking, too.

Time for a closer look, I think:

There is a slight increase in detail.
It's not obvious but it's there alright.

Yep, water. The only thing that can kill a codec.
The Superbit is much sharper than the R2UK.

You're not likely to notice it while watching the film, though.
Even on a gigantic projection screen.

Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Thanks Tom.

The changes are so minute I don't think I'd notice them. You'd think they'd have gone to the trouble and remastered it too. I can see the differences when in those captures but even then it's so utterly minute you really have to be looking.

And if you cannot spot them when watching the film I'm sure I won't.

Did you use Lourdes' instructions for creating captures?

I don't have to follow other people's instructions.
It says "super moderator" above my avatar.
:D

I've used VirtualDubMod to take the caps and Irfanview to resize.
Should be pretty accurate.

I asked so I could add R3 captures. VirtualDubMod is what Lourdes' instructions say to use.

When are the times for the first 3 captures? I'm not sure how you do accurate zoomed in captures so will avoid doing those.

I wouldn't say much sharper but the encoding looks better, in that water capture.

Much sharper "in that last cap".
The R2UK is a blurry mess by comparison.

Not much of a difference, at least not enough to consider an upgrade. The real difference will be seen when this film gets a HD release on BD :)

Only if they decide to throw away that old dirty print and re-scan the original master.

That would be the right thing to do.

I hope they do. I'm hoping that is why it got canned way back.
