This is my favourite quote:

"Board of Deputies chief executive Jon Benjamin said: We have not seen these videos but by all accounts they are extremely unpleasant."

OMG. It might as well be a documentary. How can they ban something they haven't even watched. That's hasn't even happened here in the land of censorship.

MPs and Jewish groups are concerned that it trivialises the suffering of Holocaust victims.
Yeah right.
Maybe they should ban Sammo Hung's kung-fu comedies because they trivialise the suffering of the Chinese people under the manchu rule.

Bullshit. No content is unacceptable.

Some jews need to stop moaning about the holocaust and start getting on with their lives. Pressure groups are evil.

Yeah, but the Manchu rule of the Chinese happened hundreds of years ago and the Holocaust is relatively, tragically recent history. There are some people still alive who can remember it, and Holocaust survivors. That is why people "moan" about it
I agree with Mark though the banning of something they havent even seen is ludicrous.

The movie was made in the mid-SEVENTIES.

Have we seen a rise in Nazi-porn since then?

Nope, seems not.

The jewish people have no right to bitch and moan about the depictions of the holocaust, if at the same time they are closing their eyes for what the Israeli's are doing to the Palestinians...

The holocaust was a horrible horrible thing, make no doubt about it...

...but right now, Israel is acting like nazi's towards the palestinians, so they should keep their mouth shut about the way THEY suffered, cause they're doing the same to others.

by grim_tales
Why'd you bring that up? :? The Palestinans also behave in a similar way towards the Jews too. Its not just one side being aggressive to the other. Both of them are fighting.
In that case no one has the right to bitch and moan about anything, because of what has happened in a countrie's history, the Chinese shouldnt moan about Japanese oppression in WWII, because of how they oppress people in Tibet... etc. Where does one stop with this?

It's one side suppressing, and one side fighting that suppression.
The Palestinians have been suppressed for over 40 years.

Especially the non-existant Palestinian army.

Aren't there Palestinian fighters?
If one side puts down its weapons, how do you know the others will follow suit? There are Palestine terror groups which is not jsutified either.

When you put it like that I see what you mean. :( As your illustration shows, Palestine used to have a lot more land, on which (I guess) they lived peacefully with Israel or as it then was, and this kicked off when israel was set up as an independent state in 1948.

The west call them 'terrorists', but for many they are 'freedom fighters' or whatever fancy name you might give them.

They kill innocent Israeli's with their hand-made rockets, and I certainly dont aprove of that, but I do understand that sadly that's pretty much the ONLY way they have to fight their suppressor, and get attention for their situation, and get revenge on what is being done upon them.

I think many of us would be full of pain, hate and anger if our country, friends and family have been oppressed for over 40 years. And many of us would want revenge if that oppressor ruins all our lifes.

Anyway, I already know that I'll be misunderstood etc on this issue, so I wont make this any longer than it needs to be.

They should go after the Israeli army though IMO, not kill innocent people. Killing innocents is not the way, that is cowardly IMO.
Anyway lets leave it at that :)

Yeah, it's always smart to up against a triggerhappy, state-of-the-art, highly modern and effective and deadly army, when you yourself only have bottle-rockets(!)

You know what's cowardly? Bombing civilians from 3 km's height, because there MIGHT be a terrorist among them. You know what's cowardly? Driving your 20 million dollar tank into a neighbourhood and shooting all the houses down. You know what's cowardly? Using long-range missiles to bomb schools and swimmingpools etc.

Suicide-bombing is a whole lot of things... but cowardly it's not.

I totally agree killing innocents is not the way. But one of the reasons why these palestinians are so damn angry, is because Israel has been killing and harming and jailing and oppressing innocent civilians for 40 years now, and apparently the world turns their head when Israel does it, but is outraged when once in a while a suicide bomber, filled with anger, hait, pain and distraught, etc, succeeds in killing a bunch of Israelis.

Now, they have every right of being outraged about some suicidebomber succeeding in killing innocent people. That's horrible.
However, it would be nice if they then wouldnt look the other way again when Israel kills so many civilians.

Israel has been violating UN resolutions left, right and center, and hardly anyone takes any action against it.

The palestinian people and those suicidebombers arent the cowards here. It's the west that is ignoring Israel's crimes, that is the coward. It's Israel that's bombing and killing and punishing the palestinian people for so very very long, that is cowardly.

What you described (blowing up a school or whatever) sounds like suicide bombing also :( Sounds to me like there are double standards going on when the US and Israel/Palestine are concerned. You're obviously not condoning suicide bombing, simply questioning the difference in reaction.

I'm very much against suicide bombing. Just as I'm against any kind of bombing.

But just because I am against something, doesnt mean I do not understand why it happens sometime. And for the Palestinians, suicidebombings are pretty much their only chance to hit their enemy 'succesfully' and kinda get 'revenge'.

If Israel wants the Palestinians to stop acting like beasts, then Israel shouldnt TREAT the palestinians as beasts.

You want to ban it? I'm surprised you of all people Mark want to censor (i.e - ban) it.

It sounds right up Hung's street :D

It sounds no better or worse than many of the video nasties. They're not banned.
MPs and Jewish groups are concerned that it trivialises the suffering of Holocaust victims.
That is just a little OTT. Most people are more intelligent than that and those that aren't were unintelligent before they saw the film anyway.

It's typical silly season, with nanny pampereing politicians meddling like an unwanted aunt. Sadly in the past they got their way, in the 1980s. I hope we never see a repeat of that

I don't think they will. The BBFC have passed it and that's that.

Posted: 02 Feb 2008, 01:49
by Killer Meteor
They could always tell the BBFC what to do. In the 90's, Dave Alton tried to get all 18-rated movies banned - or so I heard

Posted: 02 Feb 2008, 02:30
by bradavon
Really? Crikey that's extreme.

They could definitely but the BBFC are given lots of power to oversea it for the government. I don't think they would.

Posted: 02 Feb 2008, 08:07
by Killer Meteor
Yeah. The BBFC itself is pretty linent. And I think that violent pornography ban got stuck in the house of Lords - unless I've missed an update

Much as I loathe BBFC censorship, we must be grateful that its always acted free of government control. It's state approved censorship but not state censorship

To be fair to the BBFC they're much better than they used to be. The MPAA cut loads too but few seem to complain about them.

A lot more films are getting Unrated releases so the MPAA is often just a nuiscance. Many of the 1980's horrors films, in particular the Friday the 13th sequels - were neutered by the MPAA before they ever saw a cinema and have yet to see uncut releases
