Until it also play BD it could cost £50 and I wouldn't buy one. I'd probably recommend my friends do though.

At Ibood.com there is now a HDDVD Toshiba up, including 4 movies...

150 euro. Personally, I'm not interested. I think I'll end up with a PS3 and Blu-Ray (PS3 rumoured to drop to 300 euro at the end of the month)

HD-DVD is far from dead. It's likely to die but has lots of time left in it yet.

Aren't those much more expensive? PS2 games are old. Fine if you've got some but not otherwise.

I love the "Metal Gear Solid" games. If I can't play them on the PS3 I'm not buying one unless they start producing the more expensive version again at a lower price. I'm not keeping two Play Stations next to each other. I also have a Nintendo Wii so it's bound to look messy next to my TV.

As for HD, yes it's dying. Why invest hard earned cash into something that is dying soon?

I dont have any PS2 games, although some I'd love to play. The Metal Gear Solid trilogy is certainly on my wish-list, but I believe those will have HD remakes soon, so that's ok.

Also, even though Sony dropped BC, it seems they are still looking for programmers for BC for their PS3 and the upcoming PS4, according to some news last week, so we can only hope that BC will make a return.

If the 360 had been fully BC, I wouldnt have to mod my Xbox to make sure I can put my games on the HD and still enjoy them all in 5-10 years time...

As far as HDDVD goes. I'm not sure if it's dead. I certainly hope not, as it's better than Blu-Ray (region-free, no DRM crap), but sure as hell wouldnt waste more than 100 bucks on it at the moment.

What's BC?

HD remasters of the Metal Gear Solid-trilogy? Where have you heard about that? Because that would be awesome if it was true.

Because like I said it's not dying soon or even confirmed it's dying, it's likely though.

* Toshiba still sell Players
* Microsoft still supports HD-DVD and sell the Xbox 360 add-on
* Paramount still support only HD-DVD
* Universal still support only HD-DVD
* None of the above have eluded to supporting BD in fact quite the opposite
* Many European labels still only support HD-DVD
* Terminator 2 is still coming in March on a super duper HD-DVD German SE
* Terminator 2 BD still sucks!
* There are still 500-1000 HD-DVD exclusive titles and more coming soon.
* Even if both Universal and Paramount also supported BD it will still take months (if not more) to re-release all those movies.
* Owning HD-DVD Player doesn't suddenly stop all your HD-DVDs from working. You can own both you know
* Owning a Combo Player will still let you play BD and your existing HD-DVDs

In short HD-DVD isn't going anywhere any time soon. Me I'm going Combo. T2 German SE will be Mine! 8)

I'll give you Region Free but what's all this DRM crap? Both have copy protection which is in fact identical. BD has an extra protection layer but you should only come across it if you try and copy one and that's not yet possible. I believe some players have issues playing some BD+ encoded discs but that's down to firmware nothing more.

I believe that's the gist of it anyway.

around 800 titles tells me the format isn't going anywhere soon.it'll take years to re-release the hd-dvd exclusives onto blu-ray.

And unlike Laserdisc your player isn't defunct even if HD-DVD does die.

Today at Ibood, that Toshiba HD-EP30 including 9 HD movies, was offered for 90 euro...
I thought about buying it, but TBH I am just not gonna bother. Now that HDDVD is dead, those movies that are out on HDDVD will probably come to BR.

Yes they will but it will take months/years. It all depends if you're happy sticking with BD and waiting for the eventual HD-DVDs or not. That and both Paramount and Universal will at some point let us know what their next/first BDs will be. We'll then have a better idea of the schedule.

It's unlikely I'd ever pick up a HD-DVD Player outside of a Combo. I've always been against owning two players.

...and? Wanting to play classic games is no different than wanting to watch classic movies. Just because a lot of fickle people won't care, doesn't a lot of others don't.

I for one would love to have the option of playing classic PS2 games w/ proper hardware-based upscaling.

You cut my sentence in half! Read the entire sentence. Newcomers to the PS3 aren't also going to have any PS2 games to play on it.

Not only it'll take month/years until the BR catalogue catch up, these films will sell on BR for about 25 € apiece while as of now, you'll be able to find the exact same disc on HD-DVD for 10 €. Buy a handful, and your player came for free. Plus it can play DVD too.

Agreed, all these cheap HD-DVDs are mighty tempting. I hope I won't buy a HD-DVD Player though and it will be a Combo. LG are still supporting Combos.
