Aye I heard about this film by pure chance. It wasn't advertised very well - I don't think too many people know about it.
It's quite a smart little noir-ish thriller - similar to Memento. It's about a guy suffering from serious head injuries after a car crash. He's trying to get his life back to normal but keeps getting put down by the people around him. But then he starts making some dodgy new friends hmmm....
Some may find the storyline a tad unconvincing but it makes good viewing. It's writer-director Scott Frank's first film and he does well to pace it slowly and provide a desolate, bleak atmosphere. I'll be keeping an eye out for Frank's future titles.
The Lookout is by no means amazing or revolutionary but deserves a hell of a lot more attention. It's worth viewing once and I'm guessing that a lot of people here would be impressed. It's much better than a lot of the shite we got last year that's for sure. The R1 DVD is out now - R2 is on its way in April I think.
Shingster wrote:It's nothing like memento in fairness. It's a good film though, although strangely not as gripping or dramatic as it tries to be.
True but I meant in the sense that Pratt's condition forces him to solve a problem backwards, just as in Memento the audience tries to solve the whole film backwards.
But yeah I know what you mean - it's not really anything like Memento apart from that one wee thing.
Yeah that's true I guess, it's a bit similar in terms of the character motivation, but it doesn't really drive the narrative much in the final act - or rather it's much less effective in this regard than Memento is.
