It's BFI who have gone OTT with the 'restoration' this time. They both used the same print/master which is rather poor and you can plainly see the different approaches. The BFI does look better in some places but on the whole it loses detail to try and hide some of the print damage. The Criterion also has better audio, much cleaner than BFI's. Translation wise BFI > Criterion yet again and quite clearly in this instance.
The Criterion release has a commentary, the "It's Wonderful to Create" docu from the R2J and a video essay on A.K. and censorship. BFI has nothing.

If the German DVD is of any interest (no English subs), I might post screencaps some time.
