Lethal Weapon 2: HD-DVD vs. DVD *LARGE PICS*

Post by captainjoe »

Lethal Weapon 2

Top: DVD
Bottom: HD-DVD

The HD screenshots are all from HDMOVIES.co.nz, notice the watermark. I matched them with the DVD. Compared to the DVD, the HD-DVD is very
good. But compared to other HD transfers it falls short, mainly because of the de-interlacing technique Warner has used. This verticle filtering that
results in jagged edges has been found on a few early releases from Warner including The Fugitive, Perfect Storm, Lethal Weapon 2, Full Metal Jacket
(original release) and Willy Wonka. It seems that Warner has ceased from doing this recently with only well-mastered titles being released and thank God for that.
This transfer could have been quite good but it loses out in the end with the filtering. But it does have solid colours, hardly any EE and some film grain is intact.
Time for a new 4K high definition transfer that Warner is allowing Blade Runner and Dirty Harry to receive.

The HD DVD picture is awful. This is one of my favourite films. :(

I know that they could do a much better job than that.

What Iron Monkey said...

Though obviously it is better than the DVD.

But we knew that...

It is better than the DVD, but it feels like it should be classed as a "Not-SD-but-not-quite-Full-HD" release. There's just so much more detail that could've been on the iamge - like the gravel on the shot with Riggs & the police car...

I think it looks like a HD transfert made in 1999 or 2000 or something... When did they issued those remastered for DVD ? This would be the time when they made the transferts.

That's around the time they were released. Baddly dated transfer with blockiness, verticle filtering, little detail, dirt, etc. Warner needs to re-issue this.
