France unveils anti-piracy downnload plan (Tom watch out!)

Post by bradavon »

Scary -
French web users caught pirating movies or music could soon be thrown offline.

At least it makes more sense and is certainly fairer than the bureaucratic American method whereby kids are sued

I can see this model being rolled out across the EU. I wonder if bad offenders details will be passed around ISPs?

meh...

Most p2p networks are quite secure now.
If they can't identify the files that are being shared, they can't prove anything.

Not too worried.
Shocked, but not worried.

Thanks for the info, B.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

I don't like this at all, P2P is intriniscally insecure and public. I'm afraid you're mistaken Tom, there is no security at all except in obscurity. For example being part of a private site/network where peers aren't monitored (rare) or avoiding anything belonging to an entity that protects its intellectual property.

Actually, this is just the CEO of FNAC (Virgin like major chains of store) who after having put out all small records shop out of business, is now trying to ban music from existing at all in France.

The reason the music market is in crisis is not downloads, it's fnac having reduced 75% of their shelf space for CDs in 5 years, to sell instead ipods, portable computers, and anything that is used for, wait, could it be, downloading ?

You can't find most old french rock records at FNAC at all, if you aren't on a major, it's dead for you now. So basically, by trying to stop downloading, they will prevent youngsters from discovering any other artists than their "Star Academy" collection of unlistenable crap and pre-fabricated stars. I mean you can't get old Misfits 77-83 records in france. Nowhere. Bad Brains, Black Flag ? Forget it, (and in fact, it's always been impossible to find their records once the indies shops were gone).

DVD Vision: It looks to have government backing too.

@ Tom: I agree with Lourdes but regardless if an ISP wants to ban you they will. Proof or no proof.

Hasn't this been mentioned on French news?
