Crysis...

Post by IronMonkey »

I just have to say, this is the best FPS I have ever played, bar none. And I've played a lot of FPS games.

Wow. Its simply stunning. I'm only on the second chapter but I am playing through on the Hard difficulty...

After that, I'll do it on the hardest difficulty - the equivalent to Far Cry's Realistic mode. I beat that, so I should be able to beat Crysis. I can see me playing this game for a very long time to come...

I played the demo, I loved the power suit. Popping out of stealth, shooting a Korean in the head with the silenced LSCARS set to single shot mode and then going back into stealth is very satisfying.

But the best FPS ever? Have you played any of the Warren Spector classics - Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Thief 1 & 2 (and I'm talking the original PC installments, not their gimped for console sequels)?

I've played Deus Ex & Thief, but they're completely different! To me, Deus Ex is an RPG shown from a first person perspective. Crysis gives me the freedom to approach the situation in any way I want (I know you can say the same about Deus Ex). Crysis "feels" much more open to me.

I don't know, I can't describe it, but the tactical shooting & thinking mechanics in Crysis just appeals to me more than the RPG-style Deus Ex (thats not to say I don't like Deus Ex, because I do).

What kind of PC do you need to run Crysis with all the graphical stuff set to 'high' etc...!?

Well I have pretty much everything on High, except for "water quality" & I also have post processing on very high.

I have this PC:

ASUS Crosshair
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+
ASUS Extreme 8800GTS 640MB
4GB (2x 2GB) Corsair DDR2
Creative X-Fi Extreme Gamer

The game runs very smooth for me at 1280x768 but I don't use AA. If I put 2xAA on it seems to run pretty smooth except for when there are large explosions on screen & the mouse starts to lag slightly. I've never been one to bother with AA in games though, so without it the game runs great!

I should add that if I run the game at the native resolution of my monitor, for the most part its pretty smooth, except in larger firefights, but since its perfectly smooth at 1280x768, I leave it at that.

Plus, the scaling of 1280x768 up to 1680x1050 native resolution intriduces the tiniest bit of blur which acts as a form of AA so to me its a winner! Don't get me wrong, the image is still excellent, but playing at a slightly lower resolution helps the fluidity of the game & also gives me an edge-smoothing effect!

I know its no match for 1680x1050 native with 8xAA & 16xAF but there's no rig in the world that can play Crysis at maximum settings, and probably won't be for another 3 years or so!

Damn... that's some good specs you have, and it's still not 'perfect', if you know what I mean.

I'll be getting a new PC (and monitor) early next year (that's when the big pricedrops occur), so hopefully by that time I'll have a 1000 euro PC with 3-4 GB of memory and a good graphics card to run this in the highest possible settings...

I keep hearing awesome stuff about it. I'm not really a PC gamer though, but perhaps when I have a kick-ass 22-24 inch HD monitor plus a kick-ass powerfull PC, I'd like to give it a try.

Can you play it with a controller btw? Or would that just SUCK!?

Damn, that's sad to hear. Kinda makes you wonder why they even release it like this, when no-one can play it at the maximum settings...

To make it kind of futureproof, I'd imagine.

Yeah... but usually PC games are in the budget-range within 6 months... so whats the use? Most people wont have a good enough pc to buy it this instance... and when their computer IS up to date, it will be much cheaper...

Crysis is 100% compatible with a Xbox 360 pad. You'd be be a retard to use anything other than a mouse and keyboard though. The aiming in the game demands precision and high responsiveness, you don't get these with dual analogue sticks.

Future proofing as Gas said. You'll probably need a high end series 9 Geforce (due out next year) to get the most out of this game.

Worth noting that it doesn't require Vista and DX10 to get the most out of game. You get like 95% of the DX10 Very High level effects in DX9 by turning on the appropriate console variables.

Yeah, I know... but TBH I dont really like gaming with the keyboard and mouse. I mean, I have done it before and all and it's ok and the contol is obviously good and all... so I dont have problems with it in that regard... but I just prefer to sit back a bit, more relaxed, with just one control device in my hands.

Yeah, I guess it's futureproof, but once again, whats the use of making it unplayable for the vast majority of the gamers, and by the time they CAN fully enjoy playing it, it's probably already in the budgetbins...

Nice to hear XP users arent left out in the cold, but TBH when I get a new pc it will most likely have Vista. Yeah, I would prefer just keeping XP, but at the same time all the new programs will use Vista so might as well use it now...

Already in the bargain bin? Oh please, this game will undoubtedly be a hit. It's the most hyped PC exclusive of the season. Loads of people have upgraded their PCs or build new rigs mainly for this game.

Unplayable by the vast majority? Quit making uneducated generalisations, Crysis is a very scaleable game. It runs quite comfortably at 20-30fps on medium settings with my last gen video card. The medium settings looks a lot like maxed out FarCry.

There's some speculation that Crytek had expected the current generation of of video cards to be further along the technology ladder then they actually are. So they may've aimed a bit high. Again the game should look great at High settings if you can't run them at Very High.

I'm annoyerd that I've always needed the latest and great tech to play at my native resolution of 1920x1200.

Well yeah! 1920x1200 requires some serious power for these games! There's absolutely no way you'll be playing Crysis at that resolution for a number of years yet! :)

Upscaling via custom resolutions works pretty good with Forceware.

Scaling is just ugly (unless it's proper upscaling not just a simple resize) so much of the time I settle for 1600x1200 so I get none of it at all.

I got my 8800GT 512MB today. The Crysis demo runs very nicely on high @ 1440*900, I am pleased.
