Not a hard call... But it's a shame that the JP DD5.1 is as per usual slightly better on the R2J.

Is this film nothing more than compilation of footage from the show's first season, or does it have some new animation?

There's new footage and it's not so much a sequential compilation, it's more a re-edit so it works better as a standalone film. At a glance it seems decent, it's 140 mins which is about 27% of the series (sans OP/ED etc) and you get the best bits.

Ah, okay. Is it worth buying? Did Nightjar do the authoring again?

Incidentally I finished 2nd Gig tonight. On a whole, it was weaker than the first season.

Yes it's Nightjar. Once I watch it I'll let you know if it's any good.

Added the R2UK, amazingly it doesn't have dubtitles and the subs contains signs - although there's no separate signs track. The subs are also nice and white rather than a crappy yellow.
Video quality is definitely better, a good bit sharper. Cap #5 looks poor but that's not indicative of problems as it as a poor choice of frame to use (shot that stresses the DVD standard).

I'd be doing a BD comparison for this sometime, along with the Individual 11 BD and R2UK.
