The transfers are taken from the same masters. Why on Earth would the R3K use the masters restored by AnimEigo? Probably because the rights for this show are jointly held Tatsunoko Productions and Harmony Gold outside of Japan. AnimEigo's restoration was based on material supplied by Tatsunoko, NOT by Big West (The original creators of the show, who hold the rights to the show only in Japan but do own all the creative work:- the characters, story, music, etc. worldwide.)
To get an accurate comparison, you'd have to have access to the R2J's.
Both R1 AnimEigo and R3K sets are progressive. The R1 is spread over 9* DVD5's, the R3K set over 12* DVD9's. In theory the Korean set would have the edge picture quality wise, but R1 seems to have the higher average bitrate? Odd.
The R1 AnimEigo set is OOP and has been superceded by an inferior ADV release, which is reportedly interlaced and has unrestored Japanese mono with hiss and crackle. The AnimEigo set's mono was thoroughly cleaned and restored. AFAIK the AnimEigo set is still available from Robotech.com for $40USD (non-inclusive of shipping). R3K set has NO English subs.
