The R2J is progressive and looks very nice despite the tint. The UK disc is an interlaced, ghosting mess converted from an NTSC source. It’s too dark, the edge enhancement is more visible (both discs display occational ee) and the compression is slighty worse (cap 2). The subtitles are forced but not burnt in. Cover art and menus are ugly too.

I got the UK-DVD and I think it's a pretty decent release. :) You haven't seen the infinetely worse US-version, haven't you? Full screen and stupid subtitle-censorship? They actually made the raped 17-year old girl 21 (or was it 19? I don't remember); as if anyone with just a hint of knowledge of Japanese language wouldn't notice.

Anyway, I absolutely love this movie, kinda blew my mind, even. A samurai-movie with a couple of Spaghetti-Western vibes. Genius!

Haven't seen the US dvd. Pink Eiga also applied similar subtitle censorship to Sexy Battle Girls, adding 4 years to the character's age.

I didn't like the first half that much, but the second is great. Terrific soundtrack. And Haruko Sagara.

For more samurai spaghetti you need to watch Gosha's Samurai Wolf 1 & 2
