R1 is interlaced
R4 is progressive

R1 Top, R4 Bottom

R4 has more image. Both have more or less artefacting depending on the cap. This OVA really pushes the MPEG2 specs with so much fast action and switching between shots so it's a difficult encode. You don't get a chance to really notice problems because it's just too quick.

I think I prefer the R4 with the progressive encoding and that there is more picture information.
