Cub Tiger from Kwantung - any good?

Post by grim_tales »

I saw this in HMV released under the "Rarescope" label. This was Jackie's first real starring role in a movie right?
Is the film any good? The DVD apparently has the Mandarin version with subtitles.

I thought the film was from 1971? :?

Ain't it general consensus that all his lead role films prior to SITES are all shit?

"Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin" & "Hand of Death" are pretty solid. I also liked "Half a Loaf of Kung Fu".

Spiritual Kung Fu is worth a watch as well (so long as you're a big JC fan).

I liked "Hand of Death" also, and "Shaolin Wooden Men" was pretty good.

hey,

fun to watch to see what the original film was before they cut and spliced to create Master With Cracked Fingers. Otherwise, generic.

I've always been quite fond of the Master With Cracked Fingers hack-job and have been looking forward to seeing the original film. Let us know what the DVD is like

This and Master With Cracked Fingers are the same film?

hey,

the "creators" of MASTER used CUB as it's template when they unearthed the film to capatalize on Jackie's success at Seasonal. They shoot new footage with Simon Yuen, Dean Shek and a new ending fight with a double (plus editing out a whole lot of course). Hence, another Drunken Master and Snake In The Eagle's Shadow, only worse.

CUB was first somehow unearthed by a Japanese company who put it out on dvd. Faded print, hard to read subs. Don't know if Rarescope are working from the same print.

hey,

I wrote 73 in my review, which makes this an example of how complex these matters can become. :)

hey,

before CUB even had its print made available, there was also rumours that the the film wasn't even finished....or was it that it was shelved? :)

It definetly got released back in the day - I've seen press materials and posters. The story of the non-release was spread by that faux-auto biography of Jackie

73/74 is the attributed release date - never seen confirmation. He looks a little older than he did in Not Scared To Die, which was released in early 73.

Doubt it's '71 then, not sure where IMDB got that from.
TOUCH OF ZEN was made between 1969-71 and not released til 1971 right? But the copyright date/production date or whatever is always given as 1969.

Touch Of Zen was released in November 1971. False dates for HK cinema are common.

Was released in Taiwan in 1970 then over a year later in HK by which time it had been split into two parts (anything over 2 hrs gives HK theatre owners heart palpitations).

Oh right, 1970. Thanks!

On the subject of old Jackie, I actually enjoy all his Lo Wei efforts, though New Fist Of Fury is quite poor. Curiously, I find Jackie's directorial debut The Fearless Hyena to be weaker than the others! And I just love Snake & Crane Arts Of Shaolin.

Hyena is the worst of Jackie's 70s films.
