Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - question

Post by grim_tales »

What version is this? Is it the one with the "proper" subs?

You sure? (I mean the one with theatrical subs that I saw in the cinema?)

If so, and I can be sure I think I will buy this and get rid of my R2 :)

Hi,

I don't have my copy to hand to check, but didn't only the initial release have the subs in question? And if I recall correctly the sleeve had all 4 characters on it (including Chang Chen), but like I said, I'd have to root it out to check!!

Cheers,
Ray.

Did the Blu-ray ever get released? It was supposed to be out last January in the UK and also prior to that America but I cannot find it anywhere. I am guessing it was shelved.

Hopefully for a Special Edition. I'd just be happy if it retained the "proper" subs which I realise is very unlikely. Ah well the film in HD will do me.

So what are the subs on the UK Superbit version like? Dumbed down or what?

I think they'd be dumbed down.

The normal UK R2 has dumbed down subs (I rented it to see the difference) so I'd say with 100% assurance the SB is too.

Correct. My R3 has Chang Chen to the right of Zhang Ziyi. It's the best of the covers.

The R3 cover shown only has 3 characters on it (and says it was released in 2005) so may have the dumbed down subs :(

I've just had an interesting conversation with Grim.
He has the regular R2UK (as do I), but his subs don't match my subs.

This is an actual screencap from my R2UK:
Image

Those are the dumbed-down subs from my R1Superbit:
Image

And Grim is saying that the subs from both his R3 and his R2UK are the american dumbed-down ones.

After doing some research, I've come to the following conclusion:
Both the original R3 and the original R2UK (the one I'm watching right now) had proper subs.
Both were later replaced with dumbed-down versions.

Here's a sub sample:
-----

My R1 Superbit:
-Mu Bai, hold on. Give me some hope.
-Shu Lien.
-Save your strength.
-My life is departing. I've only one breath left.
-Use it to meditate. Free yourself from this world, as you have been taught. Let your soul rise to eternity with your last breath. Do not waste it for me.
-I've already wasted my whole life. I want to tell you with my last breath I have always loved you. I would rather be a ghost, drifting by your side as a condemned soul than enter heaven without you. Because of your love, I will never be a lonely spirit.

My regular R2UK:
-Mu Bai, hold on. Give me some hope.
-Shu Lien.
-Don't waste your breath.
-My life is departing.
-I've only one breath left.
-Use your last bit of strength to meditate. Free yourself from this world as you've been taught. Let your soul rise to eternity with your last breath. Don't waste it on me.
-I've already wasted my whole life. I want to tell you with my remaining strength that I love you. I always have. I'll drift next to you everyday as a ghost just to be with you. Even if I was banished to the darkest place, my love will keep me from being a lonely spirit.

------
As you can see , there are obvious differences (and not just in this scene).
Although the US subs flow better, they're less accurate than the UK ones.

The major difference is in the last line (because of your love / My love).
Chow Yun-Fat says "Wo de ai" which means "my love" if my broken mandarin is correct.

-----

Can anyone check their discs ?
What's your version (Superbit/Non-superbit/R1/R2/R3) and what do the subs look like in the CYF death scene ?
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Indeed, that is very odd. My R2 UK and R3 match Tom's "R1 superbit" subs according to that, I've never had a problem with them TBH....
Michelle Yeoh says "Save your strength" not "Don't waste your breath". The R1, my R3, my R2 UK and Tom's R2 UK are similar, but both my copies (R3/R2 UK) had a different last line at the end to Tom's R2 UK.

You tell us, man. :D
You can compare it to the sub samples I posted above and then you'll know for sure.

My understanding was that the R2 UK (the one I had) had "slightly" dumbed down subs but not the same as the R1 "American" ones. Guess I was wrong...

It's interesting you say the first batch of UK DVDs had the same subs as the R3. I never knew that.

Are you sure those subs are correct Tom? I could've sown my R3 has:

"I've already wasted my whole life. I want to tell you with my last breath I have always loved you. I would rather be a ghost, drifting by your side as a condemned soul than enter heaven without you. Because of your love, I will never be a lonely spirit."

I'll check later tonight.

p.s - I'm the only one with the original R3 right?

Interesting. Both my R2 UK (and now R3) have that same passage you quoted Brad. :)

@Brad:
Your R3 doesn't seem to be an "original" R3.
The subs you've quoted match the american dumbed-down subs.

I checked and my UK/R2 has the same subs as Tom's UK/R2

Eg. "I've already wasted my whole life. I want to tell you with my remaining strength that I love you. I always have. I'll drift next to you everyday as a ghost just to be with you. Even if I was banished to the darkest place, my love will keep me from being a lonely spirit."

Believe me it is.

I bought it literally only a few weeks (maybe less) after it was released, during all the uproar over English subs and dubs being removed then re-added. I had to buy it from China Town London (it cost me £28 ) as it was so hard to get gold of, this was before the Internet is what it is today.

If you ask me it's the subs you say are dumbed down that are more poetic and the so called proper ones that are dumbed down. I think you've got them round the one way, or maybe consider what I'd call dumbed down proper and visa versa.

Thanks Grim I have a headache now :D

It's a pity no SB has the original R3 subs and even sadder the eventual BD is bound to have the dumbed down subs too! :(

* I've just checked my R3 and it's the same as the R1 SB in Tom's example above. I'm confident you've typed them out wrongly!
* All I know is I rented the UK R2 about a year after getting my R3 and the subs were VERY different. It's the UK R2 that has dumbed down subs which differ from the R3.
* If you confirm the R1 SB is definitely how you say it is (can you?) I'll have to pick it up to see for myself.
That and I've always wanted a SB version.

IMO it's what you seem to be calling dumb down I'd say say is more accurate and poetic and visa versa! I'll give you an example. Which is more poetic? -

"I would rather be a ghost, drifting by your side as a condemned soul than enter heaven without you. Because of your love, I will never be a lonely spirit"

OR:

"I'll drift next to you everyday as a ghost just to be with you. Even if I was banished to the darkest place, my love will keep me from being a lonely spirit."

Darkest place! What sort of non-romantic bollocks is that!

You reckon the second one (which we definitely know is on the UK R2) is better worded?
tom2681 wrote:Both the original R3 and the original R2UK (the one I'm watching right now) had proper subs.
Are you sure? You don't actually have the R3 right? I don't believe this is the case. Like I said the UK R2 I rented was very different to the R3 I have.
And Grim is saying that the subs from both his R3 and his R2UK are the american dumbed-down ones.
It sounds like Grim has a later R3 with the same subs as the UK R2.

Is anyone else as confused as me? Thanks again Grim :D
