Post by Lourdes »

R3K is an R2J port.
HDLite is a 1280x1080 MPEG2 Broadcast.
Blu.ray is 1920x1080 MPEG2.

I find it interesting that the R1 looks better than the R3K in some caps but not in others, I know I definitely didn't mix up the caps. Weird. The BD is disappointing, during actual playback it is notably better than the DVD's but not nearly enough. The HDLite which has been around for a long time evidently came from the same master, they need to come up with a new one and a nice H.264 transfer.

Sure isn't pin-sharp, but I kinda like the BD. :)

Thanks Lourdes.

There is a clear advantage to the BD disc over all 3 others. It's really noticable in the finer detail... I think the R3K is weakest among them, then the R1, the "hdlite" and finally the BD. even going from the HDLite to the BD caps is like lifting a blurry film away from the screen...

Could it bet better? I dunno, kinda depends on the source materials :D (And it is possible the bd master was just upscaled from the hdtv broadcast --- it's been done with other films...)
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

How do you get the Blu-ray captures? You should add more BD vs SD discs.

Added the R2UK. Best looking of the three DVD's.
Pretty much irrelevant to me now, HD all the way.

Did you use the DD5.1 or DTS disc? The DTS disc is slightly higher bitrate.

DD5.1, but I'm told they're the same. It's 'borrowed' so I can't doublecheck myself.

Dammit! How come nobody said anything about the Japanese BD having English subs?!

That straw breaks the camel's back, I want a PS3.

I'm waiting for them to shrink the chips next year, apparently they run hot and get very noisy.

What is HD Lite? How do you do the HD captures?

HDLite is a HD broadcast which isn't at full resolution. Usually 1280x1080, they cheat people to save on bandwidth.
