remake of Chang Cheh's Disciples Of Shaolin. Quite regarded and certainly with quite a few merits (Lau Kar-leung returning to do the action, a beautiful Ti Lung/Maggie Cheung double act, Wu Chien-lien simply being IN the film) but sometimes it does get bogged down by Johnnie To's, at this time, penchant for OTT melodrama and cheesy montages. Before Johnnie To was Johnnie To.
I watched 15 minutes of it and gave up.
Way too... "cheesy" as Ken says.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".
certainly didn't feel out of touch with an old Shaw Brother's movie but didn't perform as well either. An early decent acting role for Aaron Kwok or rather a fitting one. Looking forward to watching the regarded original now that it's out.
Is the original (CD-WOW call this Disciples OF Shaolin unless thats something else?) seeing first or buying with it?
I also came across a 60's film called That Man in Chang-An (?) - dunno if you have seen it Mark

So he was a seasoned and popular filmmaker when he helmed and appeared in this romantic Han Dynasty adventure epic of a dying Emperor, an Evil Queen, a beautiful Princess, a dastardly royal nephew, and a masked hero. There's plot and counterplots galore, complete with cliffhangers and last second rescues?ot to mention secret agents, secret identities, secret treasure, Mongolian generals, and even master alchemists.
