'2046' - how do you pronounce it?

Post by BiscLimpkit »

Just wondering how you pronounce '2046.'

1. two, o, four, six

2. two thousand and forty six

3. twenty forty six

4. Other (two, zero, four, six etc).

I've alwayed pronounced it like 3 (twenty forty six), but I've never heard anyone else say it like that. Couldn't remember how Tcage and Staffy said it when I met them at the EIFF. Most people I know say it like 1, a few even say it like 2.

Huh you say it like 1???

It's a year (and a door code) so must be number 2. It's the year HK gives control back to China for starters.

:D

Not to mention it's a zero not O.

Huh??? I thought HK went back to Chinese control in 1997...

I've heard many say it as Twenty Forty Six but you're right it is a year so say it like 2 (Two Thousand and Forty Six).

What year is it? twenty zero five! Enough said :D

Grim 1997 was when Hong Kong was part of the Republic of China again but HK still holds control over it's own country until 2046. WKW has said it a few times in interviews. 2046 is the year the fifty years are up where China will want full control again. At the hand over in 1997 China allowed HK fifty years of grace if you will.

It thinks it will be an interesting time for Hong Kongians, not to mention they will then be 100% considered Chinese again. Something they're not going to like.

Take for example all the things HK can get away with that Mainland China can't such as movies. The ending of IA for example.

It's twenty forty six.
How do you pronounce 1979?
What about 1066?
Have you ever listened to Tchaikovskys one thousand, eight hundred and twelve overture?

LOL no

I agree we do say ten sixty six and we do say nineteen seventy nine BUT we don't say twenty forty six we say two thousand and forty six.

I guess it all comes down to what is the easiest to say nineteen thousand and forty six is a mouthful.

I've always said twenty forty six. Why does it suddenly have to be two thousand and forty six? We've been short forming for years. I don't say I was born in the year one thousand, nine hundred and seventy nine. :D

Yeah I'm gonna keep calling it "twenty forty six" cos saying it any other way is too much work.

Thanks to brooce and brassmonkey for support. :P

I believe WKW pronounces it like:

two, oh, four six

(from the ITMFL DVD)

which is different to the way everyone here says it... guess there is no right or wrong way...

I could do, but I'd be lying.:P

We say two thousand and five now, but when we enter 2010 I reckon that will change. You see if it doesn't.:P:P

I say twenty forty six, as does both Jonathan Ross and MUCH MORE importantly Wong Kar Wai himself.

A more interesting question would be at what point will we lose the thousand and go from saying say two thousand and five to twenty forty six? We only do this with 2xxx for some reason, probably because of the whole "year two thousand" fuss. I assume we'll lose it when it becomes four words in two thousand and twenty one.

In Back To The Future 2, when travelling to the year 2015, Doc and Marty refer to the year as:

twenty fifteen

Yeah based on what people say... I find it very unlikely that "two thousand and forty six" is how it should be pronouced.

Still, it did make an interesting question. I always wondered how most people pronounced the title.

I call it 'that new wong kar wai flick'.

Still searching for a site that has the soundtrack available somewhere. Seen it on yesasia and play, but much too expensive to consider buying.

I call it Twenty Fourty Six.

All the other alternatives are a mouthfull and take too long. I like things to be efficient :)

Can't be arsed starting a new thread for this, but as this film is out in the cinema just now, I was gonna go see it and persuade some friends to come too... but do you have to have seen ITMFL to really get the film?

Or can those who have not seen ITMFL still get into the film just as easily?

I believe they can it's not a direct sequel. It's just connected to it, heck out the review on DVD Times. You'll get the most out of 2046 if you've seen more of WKW's previous work. I know there is a reference to "Fallen Angels" for example.

No you don't need to have seen ITML or WKW's other films, but it would probably enhance your viewing experience if you have seen them. It works as a standalone film though.
