Sequels that are or almost are better than the original

Post by captainjoe »

I'd say one of mine would be Aliens. It's a hell of a great sequel.

Agreed on "Aliens".

"Terminator 2" would be another one that pops to my mind.

And although a prequel, I also rate "Infernal Affairs II" higher than the original one.

I was also going to say T2 but thought I'd leave that for someone else. Funny how they're both James Cameron films.

I'll say T2 as well. As good as, if not better than The Terminator.

Toy Story 2 possibly surpasses Toy Story and Shrek 2 is certainly "almost as good as" Shrek IMO.

Everything with more than three sequels is excluded from my list because it's only natural to get at least one sequel right if you try 15 times :D

Tiger Cage 2
Karate Bearfighter
Female Prisoner Scorpion: Jailhouse 41
Female Prisoner Scorpion: Grudge Song
Hanzo the Razor: The Snare
The New One-Armed Swordsman
Executioners (Heroic Trio 2)

A few others that in my opinion are better than the first part came to my mind:

Election 2
Game of Death 2 (well... duh...)
X-Men 2
Predator 2

24 - Day 2 (Does that count?)

Resident Evil 2 was better than 1
TESB was better than SW
The Two Towers was better than Fellowship
Spiderman 2 was better than 1
X-men 2 was better than 1
Rush Hour 2 was better than 1
Wayne's World 2 was better than 1
(Harry potter 3 was better than 1 & 2)

+others that have already been mentioned so I won't repeat.

I'm one of the few people who think that Fellowship was better than TTT. Fellowship had a lot of emotional moments which were almost completely missing from TTT.

I think that, technically, The Godfather Part II is better than the first. But I still prefer the first :D
And (though I'll no doubt be chastised roundly by all) The Matrix Reloaded is a better film than its forebear.

And I have to agree with T2 and Aliens. Definitely better than their respective first films.

Addams Family Values was better than Addams Family

And Kurgan - I won't chastise you, but on that one I could not disagree with you more.

Harry Potter 3 was better than 1 or 2.
Hung I'm sorry but I could not disagree more re: Heroic Trio/Executioners. Also Reloaded was poor compared to the Matrix IMO (but I guess it was OK, better than Revolutions) 8)

Aliens.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
X-Men 2.
The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King.
Spider-Man 2.

I have to disagree though about T2! I love the film, but I still think the original is the best. :)

When I was a kid, I did find T2 to be better than the first but I now think that the original is a much more intelligent film.

Aside from that, I agree with LD's choices.

I won't bother covering previously mentioned ones, unless I have a unique opinion.

French Connection 2 is almost as good as the original.

A Better Tomorrow 2 has far superior action to no.1, but has a much poorer story. ABT1 I'd rate as the overall superior film.

Beverly Hill Cop 2 is just as good as the original. Has superior action over no.1 thanks to Tony Scott's direction.

For a Few Dollars More is better than A Fistful of Dollars.

I can't compare Alien and Aliens, totally different films. One is an atmospheric horror film, the other is wall-to-wall action.

Terminator 1 is the overall superior film, but T2 has far better action.

LOTR:TTT is inferior to the original. Fellowship has a straight-forward linear narrative unlike either sequel.

The Color of Money is almost as good as The Hustler.

2046 is almost as good as In The Mood For Love, but 2046 is still my fave (probably becuz I saw it first). ITMFL shits upon Days of Being of Wild from great heights.

Fallen Angels is far better than Chungking Express.

Mad Max is far better than The Road Warrior story wise, but TRW has far better action.

Three Colours Red > Blue > White. White is the most fun though.

I disagree. T2 has bigger action for sure, but I wouldn't call it better. There's nothing in T2 that's as intense and visceral as the action in T1.

Quality film, I have the uncut German version of this which is the most complete print and it is an excellent Hammer film. Great ending to the Hammer Frankenstein saga, plus a bonus it has David Prowse as the creature. Good extra as wll, telling about Peter Cushing and his involvement in the Hammer films
