Wonder how long it'd take to grow a 'tache that big?

Looks like Uncle Fester.

Very much a white guy's idea of a Chinese.

Well, it's not like the rest of the films aren't filled with stereotypes like the pirates and the wenches etc. We're also all familiar Project A aren't we, which features a similar sort of character... I'm not expecting as much kicking though ;)

It'll be shit no matter whose in it. Gore Verbinski is still directing.

Of course Ms. Obvious ;) . I said it so that's a given :D

Johnny Depp is great but that too is a given, he's a talented guy. We don't need 7.5 hours of film to show us that though, talk about bloated. Even considering Part 1 is separate it's still a 5 hour film (Part 3 is bound to be 2.5 hours too).

I liked Part 1 but boy it's overrated. It's no better or worse than most Hollywood action flicks.

As Kurgan says he's supposed to be a Chinese "Pirate" based on expectations of what one of those looks like than reality. It's entirely fitting he looks like this.

It's more them being deliberate than anyone thinking that's how Chinese people look.

That image is just an LD thing to do :D . CYF gets a cameo/small part and it's all LD cares about.

Depp is a talented actor so it's a shame he's wasting himself on THREE of these vapid blockbusters.

I don't think he's wasting himself. He can do his serious roles, which require a lot of intensity, but then he can do things that are fun, and that his kids can watch.
He's got himself a dream job and is talented enough to choose his roles; somewhere where he can go and prat around every day and get paid loads for it. I mean talk about living the dream... :)

Surely once was enough?

It was. The first film was fairly entertaining, but I thought the second was retarded. So overlong and id nothing but set up a sequel.

It's The Matrix all over again. They're identical in this sense.

Money wise it works. I can see it happening again and again.

With the only difference that "The Matrix" is shite.

:)

The first one was decent popcorn fun. The 2nd was still OK but too long as Lourdes said and didnt work without having seen the first film. It didnt work as a standalone film.

I'm sure many other actors in Hollywood are wondering why he wasted himself in the 3rd highest grossing film of all time. They're probably all laughing at him in his choice of films, gloating with a huge sense of superiority while they're making their films that sometimes make it on to the world's film radar.

Depp has stated that Jack Sparrow is one of hte most fun roles he's ever played, because he just gets to prance around and have fun all the time. It's a dream job for him, and didn't he get an oscar nomination for it or something?? Can't remember that one for sure.

I personally thought hte first one was great, the second one was really good and entertaining but not as good as the first. Am still really looking forward to the third one though.

And comparing it to the matrix is a bit unfair. Matrix part 1 I thought was hte best film of all the 6 in question, but matrix 2 and 3 were complete poo.

I agree with Degen, the first Matrix was a great film, parts 2 and 3 were poo in comparison. I agree about Pirates too. Amazing as it may seem, you are right, Depp actually won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in the first one, OK you may sneer and say its not proper acting, but it's a different style of acting and Depp is hilarious and FUNNY, really carrying the 2 films unlike Orlando "plank of wood" Bloom.
I think the thing with Pirates 1 was it surprised everyone it was a good, enjoyable film, maybe the fact it was based on a Disneyworld ride made it seem a better film? I mean people went in with low expectations (I did), but it was very enjoyable :)

To each his own. But they're not my cup of tea.

And Depp's Oscar nom was pretty ludicrous when you consider the films he's been overlooked for.

Ed Wood for one.

2. Edward Scissorhands
3. Donnie Brasco

Donnie Brasco Oscar worthy? It's good but not that good, it's no Goodfellas or Casino. Granted Edward Scissorhands though, easily.
