"As Tears Go By" and "Days of Being Wild"

And will still have little idea of what will be in them. By using Play and Sendit I have established:

Anamorphic 1.77:1
Mandarin Mono (I hope it's not Mandarin)
Theatrical Trailer
Film Notes

I didn't expect extras but I do expect:

Cantonese Mono
Remastered AV
Remastered Subtitles

I love the look of the cover art though.

If the AV and/or subtitles are remastered I'll be upgrading. The PQ and subtitles on the HK DVDs are awful, especially the subtitles.

They're awful on the HK DVDs, absolutely full of spelling, grammar and punctuation errors. You can understand what is being said but they're definitely Engrish not English. The PQ has specs and marks at the start but gets better as it goes along (it could still be improved though).

Otherwise I'll be sticking with my HK DVDs, they're 3 times cheaper.

According to DVD Beaver the newly released R1 SE's of these two films are as follows:

"As Tears Go By" looks to be a port from the HK DVD, it looks identical BUT onyl has Cantonese Mono sound, if you prefer re-mixes (of which I think they're faithful) get the HK DVD.

"Days of Being Wild" is to green on the HK DVD and is therefore better on the R1 SE. Again it has Cantonese Mono compared to Cantonese DD5.1.

I've no idea if the subtitles are better but going by one screen capture it looks like they could be.

I am waiting for them to be cheap, the thing is I have always wanted to see both of them, and havent ever got round to it as they havent really been on TV and one day I will get both on dvd and hope they are good, maybe they will be worth the wait

Currently the R1 DVD's are the way to go, "As Tears Go By" as it looks like the subs are better (the PQ is the same) and "Days of Being Wild" as it looks like the subs are better and it has better PQ (it is to green on the HK DVD).

Both only have mono sound though. The remixed DD5.1 is quite effective on the HK DVDs. I seriously can't see the R1 DVDs being better enough to warrant an upgrade for me though. They don't look that much better on the DVD Beaver comparisons.

Which is why I'm really hoping Tartan have done a decent job remastering (ala Hard Boiled). I'd definitely upgrade then.

But I suspect they're ports of the HK DVDs and therefore will be expensive.

Really looking forward to a good quality dvd version of Days of Being Wild. However, unless this Tartan edition is gonna get a very high AV rating, I will wait untill those WKW editions come out. It was rumoured he is busy with special editions of all his movies so they can get great quality dvd releases!?

Please that news has been around for at least 2 years now with nothing concrete to back it up I'd love to see decent re-releases but are they really going to happen?

You don't have to be a DVD fan to realise a good portion of his back catalogue is dreadful. If it was me I'd be very angry at the mess they're in. What region too? Region 1 and UK Region 2 has only recently released some of his work.

The photos in that link are quality though.

I finished watching "As Tears Go By" earlier tonight and I thought it was a very good start. That is not to say it's a great film, a good one though. I'd give it 7 out of 10. I hope a recent remaster comes as the HK DVD isn't great, least of all in the subtitles. They're bloody awful (by the end I was getting very annoyed with them). I was going to watch "Days of Being Wild" next but I'm going to wait until I have the UK R2 or R1 now.

The UK R2 is out in a few weeks so it's not long to wait.

Very dissapointing news to say the least. I guess us region 2 Wong Kar Wai fans cant get a break. Hell... even region 0 peeps have a hard time getting the definitive versions of his flicks.

What a load of worthless bastards over at Tartan, to get us excited over this, and coming uo with SHITE.

Ofcourse, it's Tartan, so in 2 months they'dd release a remaster, then a remaster plus improved sound 2 weeks later. Then before THAT version is in the stores, they will already be announcing 2-disk versions, after which there will be limited TIN editions, which afterwards happen to be faulty pressed, so they will re-release the limited TIN editions... etc etc...

I wish the people working in the DVD industry knew what the fans would like to see, instead of knowing how to produce a crap-quality release that no-one wants.

I know I read that confirmation too.

I'll be ordering the R1 DVDs over the next few weeks. While "As Tears Go By" at least is the same AV wise the subs should be much better. BTW DVD Beaver have changed their mind and are now saying "Days of Being Wild" should be green as it's how they wanted it originally. The R1 therefore has had it's colours changed. The HK DVD hasn't been changed.

Either way the subs on the HK DVDs are so bad so they're not watchable.

In fact I think I'll get the R1 box set with the exception of Fallen Angels it has the best versions of each film (okay Chungking Express is now better on UK R2 but I'm happy with my R1). The R4 Fallen Angels doesn't look wildly better, plus it will be nice to have all in the same series.

Is there anywhere the new Kino R1 box set can be bought without fear of customs? I guess not. Very few places seem to sell it.

The best I can find is £35/50€ from DVD Pacific. DVD Soon or Play don't sell it.

I had a look how much it would cost for, separately:

As Tears Go By
Days of Being Wild
Happy Together
+ The R4 Fallen Angels (it's better quality than the R1)

And it came to £48/68€ so I guess it's still worth the customs risk. Only Chungking Express I don't need in the box set (I already have it) and I should be able to trade that.

Two DVD Beaver comparisons further confirming the Mandarin soundtrack. It says they asked for Cantonese but got Mandarin. I say source elsewhere:

They're both DVD-5 discs which doesn't worry me as the contents can easily fit on a DVD-5. For what it's worth (which isn't a lot) I prefer the Tartan's PQ overall.

I'll for sure be getting the Kino box set now. If only I could get it customs safe

Slightly off topic. I e-mailed CD WOW about the WKW R1 box set mentioning it's the cheapest at DVD Pacific for £35 and this was their reply:

[i]"I’ve checked it with our suppliers and we could put it on our site for GBP 39.99 and that will cover all import duty as well. I’ll order some and it should be on the site next week."[/i]

So top news if you ask me. The box set is £35 from DVD Pacific but will probably incur a £10-13 customs charge. The box set from CD WOW is £3 more but no customs charge. So I'll be getting it for sure next week.
