Hand of Death: HKL vs FOX vs HK Vidéo

Posted: 25 Dec 2006, 14:08
by Markgway
Note: HK Vidéo were so embarrassed with the quality of the print that they decided to release it for free.
The whole movie can be found on the bonus disc of Last Hurrah for Chivalry.

HKL top.
FOX middle.
HK Vidéo bottom.

So far Fox is the winner (both picture and sound).

I'll wait for the Joy Sales and then decide which one to get.

Is the HKL audio a FS remix?

We can only assume it is unless HKL used a Media Asia soundtrack years ago when working on the DVD (something they did for 'Heart of Dragon' - applied to the original trailer too).

Mark, can you confirm both remixes on the Fox/HKL are the same?

I have my unremastered Deltamac DVD but it does contain mono English/Mandarin soundtracks with Engrish subtitles  .

hey,

with Deltamac's budget line, you knew what you were getting and more often than not, I was satisfied.

I'll add some HK Vidéo caps later.
Gotta add my Versus caps first. :)

Ahhh!!

You and your damned French caps  . That'll be the winner no doubt.

Another thing I've thought about:

Fortune Star provided restored versions so distrabutors wouldn't need to lift a finger. With Media Asia, distrabutors actually got to perform the restoration themselves because there were no restorations.

Added the HK Vidéo caps.

Judging from the caps in this thread the HKL DVD looks best to me.

Hardly, when it's pinkified  .

The HK Video is kinda nice in comparison 3.

This the only time you won't be singing in French Tom  ?

The HKL tracks are all Fortune Star remixes (with naff new foley).

Buy the Fox: it's better looking, has original mono, a theatrical trailer, and is cheap as hell.

The HKL has been pinkified considerably. Those caps I chose alas don't show it at its worst. Well, maybe the first of Tan Tao Liang exercising. See how red his face is.

Wow!

The French DVD is great and they were ashamed of the disc? Shows how much the genuinely care seeing it's good to us :P !

What extras are on the HKL?
Will probably go for the Fox.

Yeah, there's even a title card that appears before the film with an apology on it. :D

WARNING

The low quality of the visual presentation of "Hand of Death" is due to an irreversible degradation of the original negative. Please forgive us for any inconvenience.

---

Which means that the original Media Asia print is damaged.

Still, you can't exactly say they're being dishonest.

At the start of "Master of the Flying Guillotine" Madman apologise for the fact the Mandarin print generally looks shit. :D

Well, HK Video seem to have done well considering the film generally looks like shit on the Deltamac/Megastar DVDs e.t.c.

Are you people expecting the quality of a 2006/07 film like "PotC"? I have had the Deltamac of "HoD" for years and was pleased enough with it. The screenshots I see here look totally awesome, even the French one.

Totally man. I.e. When reviewers (or Brad :D) complain about stuff like 5.1 remixes of 20+ year old films not sounding dynamic enough.

None whatsoever.

No extras?

None whatsoever.
Wasn't a Bey Logan commentary included?

Posted: 01 Jan 2007, 18:05
by grim_tales
Thats what I thought too :?

Yeah, there is a Bey commentary.

For some reason didn't seem like much of an extra.

Maybe because I know more about the film that he does.

But otherwise, nil.

No interviews, no outtakes, no original trailer.

There are some HKL promos if you care....

by grim_tales
How do you know you know about the film than Lord Bey does? :D
That's disappointing then if all there is is a commentary, why i'll probably rent the HKL or buy the Fox.

Damn it...

I'll probably make do with a custom DVD combining all the good elements of each DVD. Could someone be so kind :P?

Original Mandarin Trailer = Fox Lorbor (The Killer).
Mandarin Mono = Fox DVD.
Mandarin 5.1 = Megastar DVD (if it's good).
English Mono = MIA VHS.
2:35:1 Image = Fox DVD (interlaced possibly).
English Subtitles = HKL DVD.
Commentary = HKL DVD.
Original Title Card = Megastar/Deltamac (although in poor condition - depends on whether 'aka Hand of Death' was originally meant to be at the bottom).
Export International English Credits = MIA VHS.
John Woo Interview = HK Video DVD.

Lol, I was being tongue-in-cheek. But seriously, he only said one thing on the commentary that I didn't already know. And he makes some mistakes.

I would buy the Fox. It's the better option all round.
