Again this is an amazing restoration that Lowry Digital has accomplished. The colours all look well balanced in this new Ultimate
Edition with much natural colours with less red. The grain and noise that plagued the Special Edition is now all gone and not
by the noise reduction method either. Framing is 100% better with its correct 1.66:1 aspect ratio. All the dirt and lines
from the SE are gone.

No contest to the UE. I have the UK offering of the UE and they've done a steller job, very impressed. The 5.1 is very restrained, it's really just Dolby Surround. At one point I thought the new foley was out of place but overall it's fine IMO.

Are those black bars down the side on the DVD? I didn't noticd them but maybe because of over-scan.

Yeah they are on there but they don't show up on my TV and yours too I guess, over-scan.

P.S. In about 5 hours or so I'll have a comparison up for Dr. No! Until then I'll be at work :x

Yes, my guess is that the UE is in an AR of 1.66:1, while the SE is cropped to either 1.78:1 or 1.85:1. No contest, UE all the way.

It's a shame that all of the UEs didn't turn out like this and that we didn't have disasters like Goldeneye. :x

The black bars at the side are because the image is pillarboxed, which is what happens when you show an anamorphic 1.66 film on a 16:9 (1.78) display.

Except the pillerboxing would normally be part of the DVD Player not transfer (as in anamorphic).

Looks like somebody doesn't really know his transfers.

Technically a DVD can only have two aspect ratios, 1.33:1 (4:3) or 1.78:1 (16:9). If a film has an aspect ratio different to those two it has to have additional black information on the top and bottom or sides, within either of those two aspect ratios.

Overscan crops off the bars on the side but they're there alright.
