Post by HungFist »

This used to be ’Women on the Run - Mega Star transfer WTF?’ –topic, but I changed the subject :D

Okay, some scenes feature heavy print damage, but the colors are great, the transfer is sharp as hell (on HK standards), it’s anamorpic , and you’re not gonna believe this, it’s progressive. And it’s a fucking HK$38 cheapie. With a little remastering this transfer could've been near perfect. What a fucking pleasant surprise. I was expecting a Universe kind of mess...

The movie’s alright, too. The idea of naked women doing kung fu is isn’t used to the fullest (actually there’s only two such scenes, both very short) but while most action scenes are good the ending fight is a five star showdown. Some dead moments here and there, but there’s also one of the sickest and unpleasently hilarious Cat III moments I have ever seen (the scene with the little dog). Good stuff

How about making this ”HK cheapies with great transfers ” topic? To apply the dvd needs to:

a) have a good/great transfer (= clearly above average considering the price)
and
b) cost less than $50HK.

Magic Cop
Another HK$40 disc from Mega Star. Very similiar to Women on the Run disc; anamorphic, progressive, sharp, good colour, maybe slight contrast boosting, plenty of minor print damage. The opening scene looks worse than the rest of the film. Both dvds include english dubs as well. Magic Cop is 5.1 only, but sounds like close to the original to me (I don’t have anything to compare with, though).

hey,
Magic Cop is 5.1 only, but sounds like close to the original to me (I don’t have anything to compare with, though).
It has that damn echo Megastar sometimes managed to get onto their soundtracks but if you re-author the disc, extracting the center channel, you're even more closer to original mono. Just 1-2 added foley effects (like exploding glass) that remains detractions.

Hero Of Tomorrow is a solid heroic bloodshed flick from Megastar. 16:9, original mono. Heck even an English dub.
