Patlabor (1989) - R1 REMASTER vs. R4 ---- (+ HK BD)
Patlabor (1989) - R1 REMASTER (2006, Bandai Visual/Image Ent) vs. R4 (2003, Madman)
No contest really, the R4 is unrestored 1.66:1 letterboxed NTSC-PAL junk, while the R1 is remastered 1.78:1 anamorphic progressive NTSC.
The 5.1 track on the R1 is fabulous. They also commissioned a new sub translation (and a new dub, if anyone cares).
They've totally cleaned the print for remaster.
Some background info on the 5.1:-
In 1999, Oshii reunited the cast members to re-record the dialogue for a Dolby Digital 5.1 channel remix. Additional music was also added by Kenji Kawai. The remastered version of this film, and "Patlabor 2 the movie", were re-released in Japanese cinemas, and later on the home video and DVD. (source)

Oh wow!!!, The r1 version looks great... Can't wait, although surprisingley Play has it has also it been released in the UK, see http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/1021511/ ... oduct.html
Dunno if it is NTSC->PAL Conversion, if it isn't then it would be a better release since it's in PAL

The video on the HK BD looks much better than the US. WTF have they done to the US release? It looks beyond horrible.

Man I haven't seen Patlabor in almost 20yrs now! Damn where did the time go. Those HK caps look very impressive, I can't be arsed reading that DVDBeaver article Xenon, but do is state how they took their grabs? They look like camera snaps of a projector screen to me.
Are the English subs ok on the HK release Hung?

The Beaver caps are taken with digital camera or something. They could just as well have drawn pictures or post storyboards. It provides 0 indication of what the US disc might really look like
For a non-native speaker, yes. It's been a few weeks and I didn't care much for the film. Might have spotten a mistake or two, but yes, they seemed perfectly fine to me.Shingster wrote:Are the English subs ok on the HK release Hung?

Time for some thread necrophilia. Is it Region A locked or just the back of the box states that it's A?HungFist wrote:Region: A

I sold the disc a year ago, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have written Region A without making sure. So, yeah, 95% sure it is locked.Xenon wrote:Time for some thread necrophilia. Is it Region A locked or just the back of the box states that it's A?HungFist wrote:Region: A

Which Toshiba is region-free? Is it region-free out of the box or do you have to get it modded?gasteropod wrote:You don't have to, a bunch of us bought multi-region Toshiba ones for like £50!Xenon wrote:Lovely... Toshiba BDX1200, you install the Australian firmware on it (official Toshiba one, nothing dodgy), and then simply press Setup, 8, 5, 2, 0 on the remote and it brings up a menu where you can change the DVD region and the Blu-ray regionYi-Long wrote:Which Toshiba is region-free? It's about 90 euro here, and I see it can also play .MKV files, and has a USB port, so hopefully that means I could hook up an external HDD and play my anime.
