Shaolin Soccer - Korean UE 3 disc Set!

Post by grim_tales »

I read about this on Debate, wonder if its worth upgrading my old HK disc?
I dont especially want to see the International cut, but having 3 versions on seperate discs means there's no icon thing.
Also perhaps the picture and subtitles will be better. The Universe HK subs are awful.
The extras look to be the same as the Universe disc TBH.
What do you think?

Does anyone know how many versions of the film are on the R1 release? The Universe HK subs are pretty bad lol.

I do, I do:

International Cut and Director's Cut on the single disc (the bit-rate must be affected, unless it uses seamless branching???).

IMO I'd get it over this UE as who needs the Theatrical Cut when you have the Director's Cut. The Director's Cut is on the Universe HK DVD but only using some crumby seamless branching. The R1 is bare-bones but the extras on all releases are pants so big deal. This does have DTS over the R1 though, one review:

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=12593

EDIT: According to that review the R1 uses dubtitles :( . Get the UE instead.

p.s - It's a pity they're not releasing a single disc version with just the DC, DTS and the extras. This is the only version most people want and it's still not available :( . The original Korean DVD is the theatrical cut.

Cooey when you get the UE can you say what the A/V and Ebglish subs are like?
I *may* upgrade but I havent seen SS for ages, but as Bisc says the DC on the HK DVD is only available via the crummy push button method (press when you see the icon) and the Universe subs are pretty crap :D

Its bound to be identical to the old versions, I will stick with my 5 quid old version as I am sure it wont be changed much and 13 quid is not worth it for 2 waste of space dvds you will never ever watch.

I'm tempted to get the UE. Doesn't the Universe HK version have a slightly cropped picture too?

I dont remember if the HK DVD was even anamorphic.... probably it was.
Well I may want to see the HK Theatrical Cut Mr. Peg, also the DC will be easier to watch.
Subtitles are my main concern though.

I agree with Romero here (jeez louise :D ). If it were a 1 disc release with just the DC then I'd upgrade but 2 discs are useless, especially one.

The DVD Times review for the R1 gives the video a decent score but the HK DVD a pretty rubbish score. Not accurate I know but I suspect it will be better, the HK DVD is old.

I read on Play that the R2 in fact DOES have the Directors Cut on it as well as the International Cut, it calls it the "Cantonese Extended Version" (112 mins).

Hmmm....

It looks the same as the R1 so far. The good news is after a few months this will be under a tenner, unlike the Korean DVD which won't. I'd be interested in owning a proper DC of this without branching but it would have to cost under £10.

p.s - I just meant it was funny spelling English that way. I know it wasn't funy at all. I'm sad.

In a few months I might swap my HK DVD for the R2 then.. but will the R2 have DTS? I doubt it.

The R1 doesn't. I very much doubt it.
