...saving the environment, despite trying to destroy it when making "The Promise."

In a bizarre piece of news that rates high on the irony scale, Chinese director Chen Kaige has apparently been nominated for 2006 Green Chinese of the Year, an award for passion, contribution, and influence in the field of environmental protection. So why has Chen been nominated? Well, apparently his last film, spectacular bellyflop "The Promise" caused so much damage to the natural environment while shooting at at Shangri-La in Yunnan, that the resulting case against him has helped raise awareness of the issue. Last year's winner Liang Congjie has quite rightly questioned this year's list of nominees, since the award is supposed to go to someone who has helped protect the environment and not helped to destroy it as in Chen's case.
