Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain R2FR vs R2UK vs JoySales

Post by tom2681 »

I've locked the previous Zu topic.
Please post the Joy Sales caps in here. :)

Last subtitle before the action starts.

HKL subs are slightly dumbed-down.
HKV subs are more abstract.
JS is OK, but what happened to the colours ?

There's a strong green tint throughout the film on the HKL. The transfer is also filtered and cropped on all sides.
The JS is perfect. Good colours, no contrast boosting.

I'm quite pleased with the HK Vidéo, especially since it was one of the first titles they released back in 2001.

The Joy Sales is good but the colours are weird.

Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

If the caps on the Tower-whatsitsname forum are right:

I'm still rooting for the french team colour-wise.

What do the French subs mean?
Eleven kings... fighting.. disputing.. something
They certainly DO NOT mean "China has been suffering from decades of civil war" :D

HKL:
China has been suffering from decades of civil wars and unrest.

HK Vidéo:
Le désordre régnait, onze rois se disputaient l'hégémonie.
=Chaos was ruling, eleven kings were fighting for world domination.

Based on my broken cantonese I can hear:
"Eleven something... World control..."

Which would indicate that the french subs are accurate. :D

From that last cap Joy Sales has the best image.

But we need more.

Judging from the one screenshot? Yes, it has.

Wow! The French Disc looks very good. So does the IVL...
But I'll keep my HKL-disc as it's quite okay for that movie and because it features one of the best audio commentaries ever (Bey Logan and Tsui Hark).

Contrast boosting is too high on the HKvideo and skintones are too red. HKL image has far better contrast but is much softer and has that ugly yellow tint. Joy Sales definitely looks like the clear winner from that one screengrab.

How are the Joy Sales subs translation-wise? The font looks pretty tough to read on that first cap.

Someone who know's what he's talking about can comment on this. I have an inbuilt typo/grammar ignorance that gets me through most HK dvds...

The subs did feel less than perfect at times... but I was half asleep while watching so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about...

The font size was a bit too small, though.

The transfer is very nice. I felt like some of the early scenes (the first scenes in the mountain) were a bit colourless but maybe they were meant to. The rest looked fine to me. I don't have anything compare with, though. This was the first time I saw the film.

Mono sounded fine as well. I think there was some harshness during one short scene, and one very brief non-action scene (maybe 10 seconds) was out of sync but it's really nothing to get worried about.
