I remember couple of years ago , if you wanted to get a Criterion Hard Boiled DVD, you had to shell out around $80 on eBay. Some DVDs went for almost a hundred bucks! Last week I checked again- you can buy a sealed copy for $16! That’s some drop!
Just thought it’s an interesting fact

What isn't known though:

1. Is this a repackage of the Tartan uncut but crap DVD?
2. Is this a repackage of the Tartan uncut and remastered DVD?
3. Will this contain the same content from whichever DVD it comes from?

If 2 and 3 are correct £5.99 is a very price. It's £7.99 at CD WOW.

The cover looks the same as the uncut but crap DVD, it doesnt indicate remastered.
How cheap is the R2 remaster now? Still not sure if I want to upgrade.

It does but the cover has always been virtually the same anyway. The cover is virtually the same for the Prism Donnie Darko DVD.

Neither am I. The HK Remastered DVD isn't great but it's good enough considering I'm not a huge fan of the film. I am a fan though.

How do you work that one out?

Never mind forget I said that You mean CD-WOW are selling the Tartan CE for £7.99, how does it compare extras wise to the older editions (I have the Winstar R1). Extras wise its fine, picture could be better of course but the soundtrack is original, I love the translation :p

The R1 Criterion and then R1 Winstar are far better extra wise, both have commentaries for one. The Tartan DVD has very little extras but much better AV.

The soundtrack is original on the Tartan DVD too. It has a mono option also.

OK thanks. Well maybe I wont upgrade as such but double dip. I like the R1 extras.

Something to note is that Criterion completely redid the SFXs of THE KILLER and HARD BOILED when they released them in the US on LD. There's even a feature talking about it - and it was probably (if I remember correctly) done in accordance with John Woo... SO... if you are used to the R1's any other edition would probably sound "different" to you...

You mean even the original mono on the Tartan would sound different to the original mono on the R1?
Thats the only soundtrack I have heard.

Brad, I saw the budget £5.99 release in the shops (HMV) today, I dont know if its' uncut or not, but I looked at the back of the box and the DVD is 4/3 (!) and seems to only feature the English dub (!) No original Cantonese track, AFAIK.
So I would avoid it.

I'm sure the box claims English/Dubbed and Cantonese/Subtitled.

Pity it's not the Tartan 16:9 at a cheap price. I don't see why Tartan have to charge full price for everything they release. Regardless of quality or extras.

Thanks Grim. It would sound about right. These cheap as chips DVD often come from different masters.

I know it really bugs me to. The same reason as Criterion I guess (except there releases on the whole are worth full price).
