That's what I thought.

HK Video caps coming soon

I guess no one here has Toei? It should the best version available. BCI is too dark, HK Video is too bright, Toei look perfect (I've only seen screencaps, though)

I will be getting the R2J's for parts 2-4, so we can make comparisons for those too. It may take some time before I get them (the last part isn't even released yet) but some day...

Like I said:
HK Video is too bright
CBI is too dark
Toei should be slightly darker than HK Video

Do I wanna pay 3 x 5000 yen for the Toei's? Or should I get the R1's?

I already got an answer, actually. I stole a few R2J caps from asiandvdguide and asked Jompis to take some comparison caps from his BCI and the difference was obvious. While BCI is pretty good, Toei has better colors and much better brighteness. I assume the results apply to the sequels as well. Time to start saving :x

Comparison updated.

I still prefer the HK Vidéo.
It has higher brightness (which makes the colours look washed-out), but the dark scenes look much better this way.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Comparison updated with BCI Grindhouse caps (not the first one, sorry, too lazy for that).

I expected BCI to get it fully right this time but no. They still offer the best contast but the transfer is darkish, interlaced, cropped and distractingly red.

Despite not being quite perfect Toei still has the best transfer. The new BCI would appear second best, followed by Ronin and HK Video. However keep in mind the new BCI is dubbed only.

EDIT: ah, what the hell. BCI Grinhouse caps for the first comparison:

(approximate matches, the first cap is next to impossible to match)
