The new DVD does have more sharpness and crispness to it without added edge enhancement. The purple/bluish
tint has been corrected for this DVD. Also, there seems to be more grain in this transfer, after looking at the original
DVD it does look like it had DNR applied to it.

However, there is contrast and brightness boosting leading to clipping in many shots. This is a shame. The new disc looks
too bright compared to the original disc. I'm pretty sure it has been artifically enhanced. Some minimal cropping.
Sometimes the grain becomes quite troublesome during viewing but this is probably directly off the original negative
and thus should be preserved for home video. In the end the best transfer is the re-issue despite the above negativities.
I wish Sony would release this classic on Blu-ray pronto; they already have a good transfer made so what's holding them back.

The 2005 certainly looks better IMO, much sharper.
Do both films in the R1 set (Ghostbusters 1 and 2) have remastered transfers? Are the extras the same?

Both films have been re-issued seperately and together in remastered prints. The restoration of the sequal is similar to the first.
The cropping isn't a major issue, I'd just say it has different framing.

Almost no difference in terms of picture info in the grabs that are actually close frame-frame, so the term "cropped" seems harsh to me.

Interesting how the there is piece of dirt on the side of Dan's face in the last cap that isn't there in the original print. And yes, the frame is exact, I made sure.

I prefer the '99 transfer. The 2005 DVD looks too bright with clipping occuring - check out the clouds in the fourth set of pics.

I prefer the colours and grain structure of 05 but it does have some contrast boasting as you pointed out.

Why have the clouds in the 3rd shot been taken away?

An Ghostbuster comparision without any pictures of the proton pack, Echo 1, or Slimer..!!....... Say it isn't so!!

Anyway, I think I will keep the 99 version, as it has the excellent mystery science theater 3000 like commentary with Harold Ramis and other shadows, it was a great extra.

Hey why the hell not. I really admire the artistic background the effects team did.

Re-issued with an increased resolution on all the caps. This way we can see the grain and such on the newer DVD.
