Rocky - R1 2-disc CE - Dec 5th

Post by EvaUnit02 »

Obviously a cash-in on the 6th film, Rocky Balboa coming out one of these days (which has completed and shelved for over a year AFAIK).
Fox/MGM Home Entertainment has sent over artwork for a new collector's edition of Rocky which stars Sylvester Stallone. The two-disc package will be available to own from the 5th December, and should retail at around $26.98. The set will carry a newly remastered 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, along with Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 Surround tracks. DVD extras will include an audio commentary with Sylvester Stallone, a second track with the legendary trainer Lou Duva & commentator Bert Sugar, deleted scenes, a making of documentary, behind the scenes featurettes, and more.

A Rocky Anthology set will also be available from the 5th, priced at around $49.98...

And yours had disc rot Marc!

I have the R1 Rocky (for the mono track) and the rest on R2. Their fine apart from Rocky IV. It's not terrible but the 5.1 track sounds really weak compared to my Dolby Stereo VHS and the version I taped off BBC1 last year - makes a great workout video you see. The film was six-track stereo in its 70mm screening but the DVD sounds awfully flat and lifeless and the seperation is poor, resulting in muffled sound. By comparison Rocky III - which was also six-track and given a 5.1 track for DVD - sounds OK

Clearly a rip-off of the Raging Bull cover.

For DTS remixed from a MONO source?! You've got to be fucking kidding, or be Brad.

:D

That's not a hard and fast rule Eva, the film has LOTS to make use of 5.1.

How does this new box set differ from the last? It looks the same, no? What about Rocky (no DTS I see)?

A mono film made on a shoe-string budget from 1976? Riiigghtt.

I thought the same too. They haven't mentioned what is different, aside from the RRP being lower than the last R1 boxset. I'm hoping that it includes the new 2-disc CE.

Yep IMO. The music and even the excellent boxing matches.

Bah! The boxset has the same Rocky barebones remastered release as last time. I so would've bought the boxset if it had the new 2-disc CE in it. Fuck you MGM/Fox.

Also released the same day is a new Rocky Anthology giftset ($49.98 SRP), which appears to be a barebones affair offering just the five films across five discs with the new “Hi-Def” transfers created for the last release by MGM. Rocky features English 5.1 DTS and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround alongside the original Mono, whilst the sequels only feature English 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround mixes. French 5.1 and Spanish Mono are featured on Rocky, whilst the sequels all feature French and Spanish Mono (except for Rocky 5 which has French Stereo Surround and Spanish Mono). All five films offer English, French and Spanish subtitles.

It's cropped a little, but the image is far superior.

From TheDVDF:-
Well, I posit that, as always, few of the people posting in that thread know what the hell they're talking about (what else is new). They have no idea which framing is correct - the previous framing may have opened the matte up, who knows? That's the point - only Mr. Avildsen knows, and since he's all over the extras on the new DVD perhaps he actually saw the transfer and approved it.
